Anybody on the Hamb sell shortened Ford 9 in. axles? Got a rear out of a '68 Galixe, 31 spline, want to shorten it 4 in. a side. Want to see if it's worth it to go that rout instead of re-splining. Got a guy doing the housing locally.

Send them to Moser, about $85 for the pair plus shipping.

Talk to Moser before you go too far. He might suggest a different rear to shorten. He saved me some money. I told him what I needed flange to flange and he told me what rear to get so that the axles could be shortened instead of having to buy new axles. What you have may work but run it past him first. He was very helpful to me.

In general, the 31-spline axles can be shortened & resplined w/o any problem. The large diameter 28-spline axles can be shortened & resplined to 31-spline if they're shortened enough - if not, when the axle gets turned down, you go through the heat treat & no one will give you any warranty on them.

Since you have 31-spline axles, it's worth a quick phone call to Moser to verify what I just typed...I had some done by them several years ago, great service, fair price, quick turn-around.

  6. I sent two 31 spline axles to Moser for narrowing. Turns out only one could be shortened. The splined area of the axles are factory hardened. If you only need to take a little off you may be in the hardened area and Moser will not cut and spline there. I paid for an axle I could not use and paid to have it shipped to Indiana. And I had to buy a custom axle. So, I agree, call first.

Moser offers a bearing and stud deal that you can not beat. The bearings have to come off for the machining and you can not buy the bearings locally for what they charge pressed on. They will also redrill your axles for a different bolt pattern if needed.

    Good folks to deal with.
