I've got a Halibrand v-8 Quick change I bought awhile back the carrier and ring & pinion gear is messed up though ,and I need a new one. My question is, is their any thing that i can swap the carrier and ring & pinion gear with. Is a 9" Ford the same or a chevy 10 bolt? Or Do I need to go back to Halibrand and get it all new??? Any suggestions??? Thanks Kennedy
Richard LeJuerrne is the president of Halibrand and he would be the guy to talk to about it. He got my parts when i had probs with my quickchange. At least he stood behind his product.
I'm pretty sure that's all '48 and earlier Ford stuff. There might be a bit of machine work to be done to the pinion gear....compare your old one against a stocker. The V8 center uses the axle housings and axles from those rearends too.
None of the hypoid gear sets will work. You need to use the 6 spline ring and pinion and differential from an early V8 Ford rear. There are new ring and pinions available also.
the ring and pinion is 35-48...except the pinion bearing surface has a smaller OD an original set can be ground down if you have the equipment
Looking for some help with identifying why the ring and pinon set recently purchased for my Halibrand V8 QC is different to what I expected. The centre ID of the new crown wheel is constant through the unit, but my original has a "step", i.e. the ID is larger on one side than the other. Local guys with QCs say my original one is what they've always received when ordering the same Speedway part number that I did, so why is the one I was supplied different? Speedway say the part is right, but are not able to check a standard 35-48 Ford to see if they are stepped or not. Does it look like the one I had in the unit originally is a standard 35-48 crown wheel?
Not an expert on V8 differentials but it looks like the new one you received missed a machining operation. I have a few R&Ps from original banjos and will look at them this afternoon. I thought they were all the same but there are others on here that will know better than me.
The new one appears to be for standard V8 early axles. I built an early V8 diff using Hot Rod Works side gears to suit slip in 9” axles and had to machine the crown wheel and carrier as per your old one. I don’t know shit but would agree with Bruce on this one.
Yep, Nailheadgirl's old one was modified for the modern side gears to allow the slide in axles. Any competent machinist can cut the new ring gear to match the old one. Used to be done back in the old days with a medium sized lathe by a hobbyist. Now everyone sends them to Hot Rod Works in Idaho.
Go back to post #5... That's your guy for things QC!! Speedway.....Halibrand.....Championship.....homemade..... Go back to rule #1 Contact HRW in Caldwell, Idaho
@alchemy is correct. Your new one is for stock axles. Your old one has been converted to slide in axles. You'll need to machine your new one to match your old one. Do you have all the axles and modified housings to complete it? Make sure you have all the correct parts before you machine the new crown gear.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. The whole diff was completely assembled, but was taken apart for inspection, and the crown wheel and pinion were pitted. I thought it was going to be a simple order-a-replacement fix! I'm looking for a local machining shop (first 4 shops won't touch it??), if that's no go, I'm hoping a pre-machined option is available from @HotRodWorks - good to know there is an acknowledged expert shop out there.
Brisbane, QLD, Australia. Shipping from USA has been difficult recently, so I'm hoping a local fix will be the answer.
