Can some of you fellow hambers help me out? I have a quick change center section, and a '40 banjo rearend. I would like to use the side bells from the forty with the quick change on my model A. Can anyone tell me what modifications I will need to do? Can I use the ring & pinion out of the ' forty rear? I planed on buying a new ring & pinion and axels. I would be happy with any info, this is going to be a fall/winter project. Or should I just send it out, 2200.00 can be spent in many better ways. I have a decent garage and have access to a mill.. How about some feedback..

  2. I think the bolt spacings onthe diameter of the side bells from V8 Ford to Model A Ford are different. You will need to redrill the center section possibly. Also check that the side bell diameter of the forty is the same and also the ring gear and carrier bearing placement is the same.

Read closely, he never said he had a Model A quickchange. In fact, he never said what kind it was - or at least I couldn't find it. That'd probably be a really good starting point for those who know a lot more than me about this subject.

As far as I know adaptors are available but it's the diff. that will give you headaches? Sorry I'm not more help.

Do you have a V8 or Champ quick-change? The V8 will accept the '40 axles, bells and differential.

The Champ has a different bolt pattern and a larger center section diameter that will not bolt up to the '40 bells without adapters, which are available from Winters as well as others. The Champ was made to bolt to two 'short' side 3/4 ton truck bells, and can use the diff. and short side axles as well. Good luck finding two early Ford 3/4 ton rears, though. Most have been pilfered by the Sprint Car guys. [IMG]

If you have the Champ, get ready to shell out $$$ to get it to work.

If you've got the Model A quickie, then you're a lucky guy... because they are quite rare. These use the Model A bells, axles and diff. as far as I know.

I believe that in the V8 quick change, you can use the '40 ring and pinion, but you are going to have to buy the lower shaft and bearings as well as the change gears if you don't already have them. If you have the Champ, you are almost certainly going to have to buy an aftermarket ring and pinion...as well as a pricy differential.

Hope that helps, there are other guys on here that know lots more than me on this subject.

I Knew I should have given more info, yes it is a V8 center section. I contacted Hailbrant when I bought it used from a dirt track guy, he said he purchased in the late 60's or early 70's. When I talked to this guy at Hailbrant he told he had worked there since the early 60's and thet there was only one maker of the center sections (although two types Champ & V8) but who ever put them together put their name on them (you can tell by the gear cover, usely has the name in it). So this much I do know, thanks for the responses.
I had one guy tell me it was going to cost me 2k just for labor, this guy wanted to shoprten the side bells, cut off the brake flange & weld on a late modle brake flange, he said the spider gears would need machining ect... That why I am asking, do not want to send more than is needed, buying a new diff & axels well that just make sense, maybe..

If your A uses the stock rear spring set up you'll have to modify the 40 ends to fit the spring. No biggie really. Brackets are available to put the spring on top.
