Hey guys, not too long ago I posted a few pics of my '57 stude scotsman. I've been looking online and in old car mags and I havent settled on a grill I like yet, or rather, one that will fit. My dad said that back in the old days guys used to buy chrome cupboard handles, or knobs from the hardware stores and mount a ton of them on a flat black wire mesh, or old wire grill. I think thats a pretty cool old trick, and damn original! Anyways, heres the front again, what do you think would look cool in there? have fun!

hmm ...mid 50s cad bumper bullets were the first things that came to mind, but then it would almost look like a cad front end... could use the grill from a 55 fairlane, or at least use the pattern. might need to loose the lower bumper, or is that not an option? in this pic it is pretty ugly [IMG]

FYI, this is the grill from a 55 Fairlane, are you sure you didn't mean 56, I think this grill is hideous. This is mine and I've been toying with the idea of cutting the vertical lines out, or maybe the horizontal ones. I will probably find a crappier one if I decide to do it, this one is in nice shape.

  4. I would either build a tube grille, or use stainless mesh filled with small chrome bullets from the trucker shop. (they use them for license plate bolts). There's a place down the street from where I work that sells them for 40 cents each

Jalopy43 used chrome drawer pulls on his shoebox Ford and I thought it looked good. Glenn, you out there? Post a pic.

For the price of fifty drawer pull knobs you could put a small Moon tank in the middle with some whatever turnsignals on either side and be done.

Are those three"ribs" that wrap around just under the headlights sposed to be chrome?
Maybe you could loose those and wrap a couple of tube grill bars around there instead.

Thanks guys, those are really great ideas! See, the ribs on the side, that DrJ was mentioning are suppose to be chrome, but chrome or not, I think they look like wang. I'd like to get rid of them and the fat shelf body line of the fender right above it and smooth it in.

Im not married to the bumper either, im up for suggestions. It looks a bit like a cartoon mouth to me, as if its constantly saying, "Duh..yuk, yuk!"

Flyin'eyes idea with the bullet licence plate bolts sounds even cooler than my chrome knob idea, but I would like to see a pic of someones grill with the knobs being used if anyone has one handy.

I also like DrJs idea of the moon tank. I'll do a bit in sodapop (photoshop) and see what looks cool, thanks for the advice so far. any other ideas are welcome as well!

hey Monster...I don't know about chrome drawer pulls, but if you go back a few months in Rod & Custom (or Street Rodder, but pretty sure it was R&C), there was a Japanese-built rod that actually used coat hooks on an mesh background. Copper colored Model A called "Rod"riguez, as I recall. Made for an interesting look. Just another thought.

The way it looks right now you could put three curb feelers on each side and paint it green and it'd look like the biggest Cat fish you ever caught..!

Must be that "lip" under the headlghts...
Funny how some cars have "faces"
I bet a '53-'54 Stude bumper would bolt on and get rid of that open catfish mouth look.

How about the horizontal bar out of a '57 Chevy grille?
