Thanks to Jtw on here I got one locally. Heads say 8CM and mercury embossed on em. Not sure on the block yet. Going to measure it tomorrow. Can't see any cracks on the deck. It dropped a valves and grooved a cylinder wall prett badly. Is a sleeve the answer. I don't think it can be bored that far. I'll measure bore and stroke tomorrow. My first flatty, hell my first ford so I'm excited

They can generally be bored 1/8" over the standard 3 3/16 bore.

The tranny looks 49 or later Ford car with the pressed bell housing. The crankshaft stroke is what you'll need to check. 4-inches top to bottom Merc 255 cid, 3 3/4" Ford 239 cid.

If you bore one out to max the rest will have to be bored out too. I'd sleave it and bore to next oversize or what ever you want. 3 5/16" is a good bore for a flathead street motor with some room to bore farther in the future. If it will clean up at 3 3/8 you would need to sonic test the rest of the bores to see if they won't be too thin at that spec. It won't leave any future bore room at 3 3/8" for sure

Just curious; did it come with an intake manifold? If so, was it for a 3-bolt or 4-bolt carb? The tranny/heads combo raise some doubt about it being a Merc.

I have a manifold but it has a water neck on it so i dont think its right. Has a 3 bolt carb on it and say 8ba 8rt. Motor has a 4 inch stroke so im pretty sure its a merc, at least the internals are. I cant really tell what the casting on the back of the block is. At the top of the bellhousing there is an S over on the passenger side it looks like H1 191 or something to that effect..

    thanks

If it turns, measure the stroke,...Merc was 4", from 49 thru 53. Blocks for those years are 8BA. 50, and 51 Merc came with a 4 bolt carb. The 3 and 4 bolt intakes for 8BA blocks will interchange, so someone may have had it in a Ford. Good find !! All the internals are available new from several sources.

Yea it turns by hand stroke is 4" and bore is 3 -3/16.

    Got it for $250 btw

Oh yea, theres an E punched in up on the manifold deck on the passenger side front and some green paint still on the bell housing.
