Technical Goofy Carter AFB seats, "needles"?

These came in an old kit and they are definitely a novelty. Guessing a marketing gimmick or a patent work around? After trying to get the float levels to my satisfaction, I opted for traditional needles & seats. Sigh...
That little round disk has a rubber center.

 

I remember them, but it's been so long I don't remember what brand. Tomco?
