GM 10 bolt, did I grab a wierd one?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Thommyknocker, Mar 2, 2008.

  1. Quickie 10 bolt ID question for ya,
I grabbed a cheap 10 bolt, looks like an 8.5" is put of something big with 5 on 5" wheel studs. 4 linked drum brakes.

The ring gear has 3/4" headed bolts, and the pinion is 30 spline 1 5/16"

Can't seam to find that combo on Randy's or Richmond r&p.

Did I get to weird of a rear end?

possibly a grand national, or 442 (mid 80's) ? although those actually go for a decent buck now.

The Caprice rear I put under my '59 pickup was 5x5. Came out of a cop car.

i believe most of the early 70s b-body cars had that rear end. my 72 impala was the same rear.

  7. Ok,
Not to bad then, thanks guys
I pulled the drums (it's got new shoes whooho) I can redrill the wheel pattern easily, lot's of meat in there.

Last sticky part, it's got a CV style pinion yoke on it. I wonder if I can get a different yoke, or I can get a CV style driveshaft?

I picked up a 10 bolt from a Suburban a while back. It had a "regular" type of pinion yoke on it. It was a 2 wheel drive version, and I think it was an 89. But I've seen the CV joint ones sitting in the junkyard too. Maybe a GM guy can tell you if the yoke will interchange.

i think all or most of the b-body cars had the double u-joints on the pinion side of the driveline. a yoke off of another 10 bolt should fit it, just remember the earlier 10 bolt rears had fewer splines on the pinion.

its a large gm if it has a cv....you cant just change the yoke,,,but you can make it like a ford with a plate on it
