Shipping engine to Scotland. Buyer arranged shipping with shipper in Miami. At first I gave them a fake number then I gave in and gave them my correct S/S number. Shipper needed copy of engine invoice. Sent it with Quality Auto Sales letter head. Then she wanted my business T I N . I don't have one. Then she wanted invoice on plain white paper with my name. Then she wanted Mr on invoice. Like the TV show. What would you have done" PS; One phone call from shipper it took several minutes spelling out Quality Auto Sales for her to get it right and I was repeating it very carefully. Now the buyer is mad at me. I forgot to mention. First they wanted it in a fire proof box then they wanted to see the invoice of the wood I purchased to build the box.

To ship an automotive part, they need your S/S...I don't think so.
    Find another shipper.

Never ever give out your social security number to anyone.
I’m afraid your personal info has been compromised. Call your financial institutions and notify them that you could very well have been scammed. They can take steps to protect you.

I don’t think I would continue business with this shipper, also I would contact my local SS office and explain what transpired they will advise you on what to do. Only give Govt agencies, banks and medical establishments SS number. Lots of scams out there. Better a mad buyer than a stolen ID, if the buyer doesn’t understand the hell with them.

Thinking about this for a minute. Do they actually need this info for traceability in case it turns out your shipping something illegal? I have zero experience with shipping overseas so my initial reaction that it's a scam may be incorrect. Would like to hear from someone with actual experiences.

I doubt it. If that was actually true…
There’s no way I’d do business with a carrier like that.

Shipping overseas is a lot different that state to state, declared value on stuff, and the import taxes / duties are another thing. Guys in Australia & New Zealand deal with this a lot, I'm sure some of them will chime in with advice.

I googled “Do you need a SS number to ship internationally? “ Evidently you do need a SS# or TIN for shipping some items

They’ve got it arse about tit. Social security or business tax ID for importing big ticket stuff into the US is needed, can’t see why you’d need it for exporting as the tax responsibility is with the importer at the other end. I’ve imported cars from the US to the UK and never been asked to provide that detail of the seller.

Your SS number is used for ID @ most dr.s , hospitals , pharmacies & other places , retailers like Amazon can request AND Receive all your personal banking info WITHOUT your knowledge or permission , most 12 year olds cam hack accounts for personal info . The supposition that anything is somehow protected these days is a MYTH !

Negatory! I don't even like giving mine to my wife.

  20. Maybe the buyer being mad at you is part of the scam to put more pressure on you to cough up the personal info.
Have you been paid for everything up front?

I think you should be able to send it the cheapest way to that re-shipper in Miami and they can re-crate it with whatever approved wood and fireproofing however they need to and bill the buyer for the custom-made crate.

Damm Dude!--I just had to look up Troll Station and there is actually such a place in Antarctica. I am going to venture out and say you have to be the most isolated person on this board! I'd love to buy you a beer and hear your story.

  24. Heat treated wood is legit going into Europe, not sure about the ss number. Check out the phytosanitary requirements before you crate up that baby for Scotland. It has to do with limiting the travel of pests around the world. You can usually find a used pallet with the right stamps on it and go from there.

Had it crated up over 2 weeks ago. Long before they requested fire proof. My S/S number in case they find bugs?
