    Wheelcovers

Something is wrong with my camera. Pictures I deleted are showing up. Pictures I took are disappearing. Who knows? I trimmed up the big rough form on the bandsaw. Three inches from the end the blade broke. I finished up on the metal bandsaw. I didn't feel like driving to Don's. Besides, his pattern mill is too slow. He told me I'd never be able to shape the form without his big machine. But I love a challenge so I mounted the hulk in my milling machine. I tried using a mill bit but it didn't cut so good. Not to be defeated I chucked up a router bit. I upped the machine's speed and it cut pretty good. Unfortunately, 3/4 of the way into the job the bit broke. I went back to the mill bit. With the increased speed it cut pretty good. I had to turn the form by hand and advance the table one turn at a time. After the basic dish was cut I mounted the setup on the drill press to cut out the center. Didn't quite finish before quitting time. Maybe I get to spin some metal tomorrow.

remember you have sawdust in your metal bandsaw now good luck

  3. If your old Fuji Finepix 2650 is acting strangely, here's a couple things you might try that won't cost anything or take much time.

Download any pics on the camera that you want to save to your computer. Then format the memory card in the camera. This will erase everything from the card and reformat it to work with your camera. Don't worry, it won't eviscerate anything!

Then set the correct date and time information on the camera. Your EXIF data shows these picture were taken on Jan. 1, 2002! Your camera may have a seperate smaller battery used to retain just this information. It may be weak or dead and need replaced.

No promises, but sometimes an unformatted card or incorrect date and time info can make a camera or memory card act wonky! :D

    Wheelcovers

These wheelcovers are eviscerating my ass. I made a second one based on the new form and I'm just not happy with it. I may have to take a break, do something I'm capable of and come back to them later. Either that or I need a vacation to the beach. Hawaii maybe. Damn! No money! Tomorrow, I drive the Seagrave back to my shop. Having it in there will re-girdeth my loins. They've been de-girthethed too long. It'll be like reformatting my brain while I reformat my camera. Besides, my finger joint router bit came in. Maybe I'll have better luck making a steering wheel.

    Drive!

The Seagrave is back! Before I put it in the shop I drove it around the area and stopped at a nearby repair shop. I love the awe and wonder it evokes. Charges my batteries. Here's some pictures of the new wheelcover metal spinning setup. I think it'll be okay. I just need to fine tune the thing. In the wheel picture you can see that the rim retaining nuts stick out a little too far. I'm putting a taper on the nuts and relieving the retainers. That Chinese grinder comes in handy. When I get all the nuts where I want them I can fit the wheelcover, and when I get the wheelcover where I want it, I can build the piece that holds the knock off.

    Progress!

Yesterday my wife made us all go shopping, told me I was buying her a new purse for Mother's Day--Fossil brand--$160. Seem like a lotta money for a purse. But, I gotta say it's good quality, looks like a camera bag, lots of pockets and compartments. Might make a good tool bag. At least I won't have to buy her another for a few years. But that wasn't my progress. Today, I was measuring the front wheel and the how far the axle protruded past the edge of the rim--about 2-1/4". It was then I realized my wheelcover form wasn't deep enough. So I recut the wooden form. One of the problem with this homespun metal spinning is that the metal is so thick--14 gauge. Most spinning is about 20-22. With the recut form mounted in my drill press I commenced to spinning. You couldn't see it in the previous pictures but I was having a problem with the disc cupping. It was pretty bad. It didn't take much pressure to flatten out the disc but still I didn't like it. Well, after I spun the disc into its deeper shape there was no cupping at all. The deeper dish seemed to make the whole thing more stable. Tomorrow I'm going to try and spin a crease near the hub. I promise pictures too. I just left the house without my camera.

I'd say, after following this post, seeing your shop, and your toys, that you got off cheap with the purse! Bear in mind, I'm right there with ya as far as full toy boxes and tolerant wives go...

Was that a man purse? :) There's a few lines in the disc. They don't look bad but I'm hoping I can smooth then out. Pics tomorrow.

    Wheelcovers!

I hadn't been spinning long today when disaster hit. Before the disaster my only problem had been making the discs come out uniform. Some had grooves here, some had grooves there... But as I was spinning a disc today the whole rig started vibrating real bad. When I turned it off and it wound down I saw the problem. The disc had wrinkled up. Bummer! I had visions of ordering a new set of pizza pans. With nothing to lose I put the disc in the English wheel and started smoothing out the bumps. Well, the more I smoothed, the better the disc looked. When I got through the disc looked better than all the others. So, I gave them the English treatment as well. Except for a polishing, I'm going to call them finished. One still has a pucker but when installed that should go away. Tomorrow I start on the the mounting.

    Jerry,

    Your discs are looking great!

Wheel discs on early RR cars were fastened by a large nut in the center. In the attached picture you will see what looks like a hub cap in the center of the disc. The nut is at the outside inch of the "hub cap" It screws to a ring that is actually bolted to an inner ring through the spokes. (Yes they are covering up a beautiful set of wire wheels!) There is usually a little tension created by the dish in the cover & nothing but friction holds it to the outside rim of the wheel.

I can dismantle one & send pictures if that is of any interest.

    Hubs

I worked all day cutting off British wire wheel hubs and making holes in Seagrave bearing covers. I only got one front wheel semi done. No welding yet. The effect isn't too bad. I've still got to machine the chrome and lettering off the other knock offs (wrench offs?) and splice the threaded part of the hubs onto the Seagrave wheels. I think I'll electro-etch something in the brass center cap--SS or Seagrave Special or Seagrave Fire Apparatus Co. or ???

I'm gonna polish them, maybe put some clear on. I got the hubs and knock offs from ebay. I think they where about $35.00.

The right side has left hand threads and vice versa. Supposed to keep that from happening. Hate to read "Man killed by flying pizza pan."
