    Rear fenders revisited.

    I started to fine tune the modifications to the rear fenders and came to the conclusion that, though they look badass, the original duck tails were in far too poor condition to work to the quality I wanted to achieve. By this, I mean that these fenders were worked over some time ago with some old school metal working methods. The rear edges were not a perfect match, and to make them such, would be more work than the existing metal could handle.

    I decided that I would be better off starting over with fresh material and fabricating the flairs from scratch. This way I could get the exact shape we had intended to get the first time.

    I started by pulling a template in which I made adjustments too. I made the new lips out of a heavier gauge sheet metal so they would hold their shape better and add more integrity to the fender.

    Marked out the cut high enough to be into unmolested metal.

    I made use of one of the junk front fenders that nobody would buy. A guy with a bead roller could make this piece. However, I don't have a bead roller.

    Then welded on the hoops and matched their shapes.

    Then onto the fun part. I hammered filler pieces with a compound curve to make the flair. [​IMG]

    I also fitted up an old pair of Horsepower Engineering tri-y headers I acquired from a shop I worked in for a while. They are in rough shape but have a lot of history. They were on a road race corvette that won the B-class championship in, I believe, 1960. They were deemed too rough for the restoration.

    We probably won't run these, but it's cool to see them bolted to a hot rod.

    By far, my favorite, subscribed project on the HAMB!! Agreed by everyone else who's seen this hot rod in the works: TOTALLY BAD ASS!!!! Why? Because I'm looking for this same "Drag Car" look for my Chevy coupe, but with a blown Chrysler hemi for power... Keep up the great work - the metal work is superb and your project will be KILLER when she's done!!

    I just measured the recess for you. It's about 4.5 inches. 5 at the most.

    I had a spark of inspiration to fit up some leaf spring wheelie bars. More or less in the brain storming stage on this idea. I get excited and can't help but post pictures. This car is like a giant model.

    We don't know if the car will need wheelie bars. The intent is to have radir pie crust slicks and hopefully it will be a bit of a smoker. However, if it were to hook up, I wouldn't want it to wind up on its lid. So I feel we will fit it up with some and if we don't need them, we'll take them off.

    Some history on these particular springs. I heard a story about a '65 falcon gasser with a straight axle in the junk yard just outside of town. I guess it was for sale and nobody would buy it... this was about 6 or 7 years ago. I went to the yard as soon as possible... only to find a 65 Falcon gasser with a decent body stacked under 2 cars. I had the yard cut out the front straight axle and springs. These are the springs from the car... the rest of the leafs went under AA/fuel34fordpu Austin gasser when he had it.

    same type of wheelie bars. I realize the ones C-clamped to the frame of the coupe would need to be much lower and more rigid. They would do nothing as is.

    I would bring the engine back about 3'' so the blower is closer to the fire wall. my two cents.

    We're taking it back 1 3/4 inches. That will leave 1 inch between the mag and the firewall. We will need to make the little notch in the firewall bigger and further back so the mag can be removed without pulling the blower. It will also allow header to fender clearance, but not create any header to firewall issues.

    Plus it looks too far forward in the engine compartment right now.
