Once again, the Henry J has been demanding my attention, so the Freakin' A has taken a temporary sideline.

I thought I would wait to make another post until I had some substantial progress to show, but it has been a while since my last post. So here is a short update on the chassis.

These are the inner ladder bar mounts.

I also thought I would switch gears a bit and work on a part of the car not based on metal work.

    -Casting a replacement shift knob-

Obviously at this point of the build, I'm no where near close to needing this, but I had other reasons for making it now.

All the details and steps of this could probably call for its own thread. This is a slightly abbreviated step by step that should cover all the bases pretty well.

Here's the original Hurst Autostick knob I have. The pattern is clear, but it was overtightened at some point and shattered. Sure, I could find another (I have one) but I opted to make one.

I used bondo to fill in the missing shards. This really shows how bad it was.

Then I made a shell to pour the silicone rubber mold into.

remove the alignment lugs and pour the second tier.

Disassemble and viola! an Autostick shift knob mold!

Mix up the 1:1 resin with black dye added.

    pour

There are still some imperfections in the knob created by high spots that the initial filling did not remove. These are now sanded out. Then cut off the sprue created from the fill spout, drill, tap, sand, and polish or paint. The pattern is painted in with a brush.

This is the one-off knob going in the coupe.

My molds never turnout that good! Nicely done, Ryan.

  24. Incredibly cool car with alot of original ideas.

I really dig the lower rails for the hairpins and ladder bars.

You're running straight ahead ladder bars up to that new mount pictured above?

  25. Very nice work there !

Just curious how long it takes to metal finish some of these pieces. Ladder bar mounts etc, incredible work man. Keep it up
