does anyone know if the speedometer gears and v.s.s. are the same from a 90 mustang with a t-5 and an 86 5.0 with an automatic? i'm mainly looking to use the v.s.s. to adapt the trans to my 59 ford
PM Fast Ed here. He's a Ford parts guy and might be able to look up the gears used on the VSS and compare those to the standard cable type gears to check out tooth count, direction etc, etc. I take it you want to use the VSS to run an electronic speedo? -Bigchief.
i'll try to contact fast ed as you suggested . i am trying to run the stock 59 speedo off the t-5 and there is no speedometer or v.s.s. sticking out of the trans . i see the gear in the trans and can see it spin as i turn the trans
The plastic gears themselves interchange just fine. You can even use auto speedo gears in a manual tranny by trimming the nose, but you can't go the other way. Somewhere, I have a chart that tells me which gears to use with which rear gears...as a ballpark number, I do remember that one speedo tooth gear is worth about .25 rear gear ratio up or down...
I just stumbled across this site. I didn't get a chance to see how much T5 stuff he had but HOLY COW! there's a bunch of parts, gears and information here. MANY Ford T5's were used with cable driven speedos. It shouldn't be a big deal to get you hooked up to your vintage speedometer with the right gears and cable. http://www.transmissionsone.com/speedometer_gear.htm -Bigchief.
