Hey folks its my first time posting on here wondering if i can get some help figuring out what motor i got i Pulled a 302 out of a dirt circle track mustang and the casting number i found on it was(3B259234) so if i could get anyhelp i tried searching online for it but couldnt find anything i have a feeling its a newer motor Thanks for any help Matt
go here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=6 to see a couple threads that explain how to post pictures. Good luck....
That looks more like a serial number than a casting number, If you don't have the engine ID tag this is all you have to go by.
the worst thing is i think 302s changed there block in 79 and i was going to start cleaning it up and painting it i need a new oil pan dist. and timing gears and i didnt want to order all wrong parts
how about looking for the casting number? it's cast, the characters stick out. The number you are looking at is stamped, the numbers go in. And I meant take a picture of the whole engine....
look above the starter on the right side of the block, all 302 blocks are the same. I think you were loking at the assembly date code.
ha yeah i feel like a dumbass hadnt pulled the starter off i just went out there and looked i guess i was used to chevys being close the the bellhouseing whats i got was D20E-6015-AB 3F23
thanks guys ill post anymore questions i have about my motor and hope fully i can get some help Thanks again Matt
D= 1970-1979 2=1972 O= fairlane/ torino E= engine (Duh) 6015= part number for engine block There you go Matt, wanna do heads? Actually your assembly date code says the engine was put togeather in Feb 73.
I would think that 3F23 is 23 jun 73. Remember that the casting number will only reflect the most recent revision of the casting. Some castings were used for quite some time, and quite a few parts share the same castings with various minor (or not-so-minor) differences in the finishing machine work.
