Curious if there are any Pietenpol flyers on here? While the last hot rod gets finished up I’m anxiously preparing for my next adventure project/restoration. It’s been a lifelong desire and after many delays the timing in my life is finally right, a nice grass runway a few doors down from my barn doesn’t hurt either. I'm pretty excited. For those not familiar, Bernard Pietenpol developed a “Popular Mechanics” type plan for the common man to build and fly using the “New” Ford Model A motor in the late '20's It’s a spruce wood plane that is very simple to build and operate for open cockpit low and slow flying. New builds still show up each year with a variety of engines and like the HAMB every builder may make modifications to suite his needs or taste. Something tells me the same guy building one of these 80 years ago would have already turned wrenches on his hopped up “T”. My search is ongoing for the "right" one to bring home. I'll keep you posted.
I LOVE it. I have been very fortunate to visit the WAAM museum in Hood River Oregon on our trips from the Midwest to visit our daughter who moved to Portland Oregon. On one trip, I had actually hauled a WWII Ryan trainer fuselage out to a buyer in Pocatello Idaho. I ended up getting it at a farm sale in Nebraska when I went out there to buy a 27 T roadster.......ahh the "good ole days" I loved the museum because they had many airplanes with not only retro-fitted automotive engines, but motorcycle engines such as Indian 4cyl and Henderson 4cyl. They also do a pairing of applicable motorcycles and cars right next to the planes with the same engines. I remember one or two planes with Ford 4cyls. in them, but do not remember the manufacturer of the airplane or kit itself. Really nice folks at the museum......even stayed late on our last visit to accommodate us arriving late on our long trip. Please .....please keep us updated on your quest.
Fuselage is gone but the tail still hangs on the wall, that was a pop rivet aluminum WWI kit from Airdrome Aeroplanes.
CROSLEY converted to aircraft use. The Starliner show in Wichita is held at the air museum. Entry to the show gets you in the museum as well. That's where I photographed this little gem. Sent from my SM-G920T using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Neat. I have a Crosley motor in my boat- it's a Homelite. What is going on with that distributor and wires? Chris- there is a Crosley chassis/engine out here in NH: https://nh.craigslist.org/pts/d/crosley-chassis-with-free/6594077517.html If you wanted to go OH valve....
they certainly are cool airplanes. i first saw a Pietenpol in about 1958 when my father took me to see one his old neighbor on the farm had. i remember being surprised by it having a Ford auto engine in it. i have no idea what ever became of it after a 6 year layoff from flying, i'm itching to get back into it. been putting some time in a Citabia in the hopes of finding a Baby Ace in my price range close to me. if you are not familiar with the Baby Ace, it was designed in the 20's and plans were sold to home builders checking Barnstormers i do see a few Pietenpols for sale
Built by ford in 1929 this is probably as close as I’ll get to an “A” powered plane. Your braver than I am lol
The Iowa Aviation Museum has something similar, but I'm not sure if its a Pietenpol. http://flyingmuseum.com/ Last time I was there was almost ten years ago. I seem to remember a loose A engine on display with some modifications to it. Stop by the Greenfield Swap Meet in September and then go a mile north of town and visit the Museum.
The auction I bought my Model A at a few weeks ago had a Model B powered Pietenpol that a friend of mine ended up with. Neat little airplane!
I’ll see what I can do. I can at least maybe come across the one that was in the auction flyer. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Here ya go. My friend is out of town at the moment, but here are the pics from the auction site. BTW, he did just tell me @KCTA Chris that he might list it back up for sale. I can put you in contact with him if you think this one might interest you. All certified, registered and flying at the time of the auction. Model B powered....that’s all I know but can find out more if you want me to. LOL
Ohh that is nice, I may have seen it mentioned of it on the Piet Facebook group. This needs to be in the air... and of course timing is off as midwest storms dinged my flying budget last month.
