Did you hear Ron SanGiovanni set Bonneville record today (ronnieroadster on the HAMB) at 192 and change, blown gas flathead modified roadster! Flatheads do rule.
I was lucky enough to find a flathead here in Taos - that was built in '65 - '67 in Inglewood, CA by a guy named Ralph Prey. It's a 3 5/16" x 4 1/8" 8BA with a Max 1 Isky cam, Johnson lifters, 3 97s on an old Edelbrock SU349 manifold, Edelbrock heads, a Roto-Faze distributor, etc. I also got the original receipts for the parts from Isky, Edelbrock, Newhouse, Roto-Faze, Service Center, and the balance sheet from Edelbrock. Going in my '31 coupe after I freshen it up.
Amen brother... We have three flathead cars. Two are always ready and driven regularly. Got another one in the shop torn down and ready for rebirth. Learned several tricks over the years which help. Most problems for us come from all our rebuilt worn out Holly/Ford 94 carbs we have!
For the record Ryan my post was instant and I liked all involved here firstly because all of you are great and had good things to say and secondly to see how liken is workin and its workin AOK...
Look like quality ARP studs to ensure a good seal. Anyway Flathead always ruled. I suppose we have three flatheads running and one monkey motion motor with valve covers (a 56 304 Y block) Oh wait I forgot the old 8ba that's not in a hot rod as yet, worn but never the less a solid runner. Yes we are infected with stupid motors as Hawaiian joe says, I you run a flathead you are stupid , if you run a Stromberg you are really stupid and man if you run a supercharger you are stupider than stupid. Yup that's us.
This license plate(realTexas vanity plate) resides in the Don Garlits Museum of Speed in Ocala,Florida. Notice the smile on BIG'S face; he was very happy I sent him the plate. The museum has many flathead cars; he got his start as many racers did. FLATHEADS FOREVER!
I'm in the middle of reading Tardel's flatheads book. Amazing book!!!!!!!!!! Lots of details and hd photos.
Beauty! I agree. ARP studs. They have a hex head in the end so you can remove them like bolts. They are the cats pajama$. Regarding not relieving the block... While relieving has been said to improve breathing, it also lowers compression. He may want a higher compression engine.
I just got my 1st flathead about a year ago. Looking forward to getting it on the road. When it comes to HP per dollar they don't add up but there will always be a warm spot in the soul for it. Mine is a stock rebuild for now and that seems like a good place to start.
