What is the proper torque limit for the main bearing nuts on a 48 Flathead V-12? My FOMOCO engine book says 60-70 ft-pounds. Seems like not enough to me. The nuts have wire slots for a hole in the studs, so they won't fall off, but shouldn't the limit be higher?
    Thanks

Go by the book my friend. Always the book. I've got a manual I can cross, but it would probably be similar. I used to think 5/16 threads on con rods were low at 15-20 until I broke one off at 25... the book is solid.

If you want to cross reference, check SAE torque specs for the size, those are fine thread, 7/16? I think? So 7/16-24?

Hell, main bolts on a 429 are only torqued to 120... and I think they're 1/2 or 9/16. Apologies on the uncertainty, it's been a minute...
