A friend of mine has recently bought a N.O.S.Mercury flathead, still on the shipping pallet. He has checkrd the numbers and it turns out to be a truck spec motor. What are the differences with the car versions, if any?He bought it off of a guy who bought it off of an old Ford dealer who had it forever in the back of his stores as nobody wanted it.When we went to see it the guy told us that he had just weighed in a load of flatheads at the scrappy and got £5 each for them!!!he had loads of choice stuff in his huge workshop inc,a 39 coupe, two 39 ragtops, a 37 all steel phantom pickup that looks just like the "Minotee" fi glass one made out of a Fordor, a mint model A sports coupe and a sprint car that he bought at Hershey years ago and just tons of other car related stuff.

Limey, don`t ask, the coupe has gone to Devon.

Finally, can you tell me if the gearbox on a V8 60 is the same as fitted to the full size eights..i,e, is it a bolt on swap?

    regards.Reefer.

No major differences in terms of performance or value between truck & car.

Although there are some oddballs out there, in general, you can't run a V860 tranny behind a regular flatty - it would likely explode on your first pull out of the driveway...they are tiny things, probably better suited to a 2-cyl engine. I'd be afraid a Briggs & Stratton would overpower one! [IMG]

Having said that, someone just mentioned having a full-size tranny behind a V860 recently & for the life of me, can't remember who...

I think only visible truck numbers are on the heads, both on early and late--Is this an early? What are the numbers mentioned? Most truck type Merc blocks would have 99T hears prewar, 59T post.
V860 commercial trans was the big trans cast with a 60 flange.

    Thanks for the replies fellas.

  6. That's right V8/60 commercial gears fit in B and early V8 (pre 37) transmissions.
