Flathead - oil filter not filling up?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by thecockeyedwallaby, Aug 16, 2010.

  1. This is strange.... Changed oil & filter as always. Oil pressure sender reads expected pressure.... Next day, I open up the filter canister and it's not full like it should be, only maybe 1/3 full or less, after maybe an hours worth of total driving.... I've never had that before, not sure what to look for. Any suggestions>

Fuel sender ???? Ya mean oil don't you? Pull both line to filter and blow through. There is a .062 restriction fitting on one side or the other you may have gotten a bit of dirt in that orifice.

Mine has never remained full - maybe you just got all the crud out of the lines so it can drain down......

  4. The top 2/3rds of the filter was dry, I don't think anything was getting in there.

There is a drain hole on the center tube about a 1/3 of the way down. After sitting it drains down.

I don't think mine has ever been full when I change it, always after at least an overnight sitting.

Like John says above, there's a restriction fitting where the oil enters the filter housing. It's possible a chunk of crud plugged up the little hole.

Ours always drains down. Nothing to be concerned about...it's a "bypass" filter anyway, not a "full flow" filter.
