Hey! Well Iv acquired a variety of intakes and I am going to use one or the other on my 59ab ford flathead. I have been doing some research but I need to see for myself what people think is the better performer of an intake? The 34 is a driver, so something with good road manners I want to use. I am definitely a newbie at Flatheads and would like to get a little education. The intakes I might use are: 2x2 Thickcktun PM-7 2x2 Tattersfield 4x2 Sharp 2x2 Sharp 2x2 Edelbrock Super 3x2 Grancor (with the 4 bolt base center carb) 2x2 Edmunds Racing 2x2 Weiand 4x2 Weiand DO 2x2 intakes perform better then 4x2 intakes? I will be using Stromberg 97 carbs on the intake that I choose. Some info on the best intake would be appreciated. Thanks!
For a newbie at flatheads, you sure have a great collection of intakes. Run the Tattersfield or the PM-7, either one screams trad and will perform well. Flatman
4x2 intakes, while pretty to look at, were made for all out performance. Run two carbs on the street.
I was wondering the same thing. I don't have any practical experience, but from what I've read in flathead rebuild books, it depends on the bore//stroke, and the cam, whether its ported/polished/relieved. If I had a choice, I'd run a 3x2 so you can set it up with progressive linkage. The idea is that you can get good performance without drowning it off idle. If you don't use that grancor, PM me. I might be interested.
The 4x2 is only for an all out race motor and will have very poor idle and street manners, unless you block off a carb or 2. Run one of the high rise 2x2's. They look great and will perform very well. Don't forget to post pics of the completed motor when you are finished.
ok, soo it sounding like choose either the 2x2 variation of intakes or block the 4x2 intakes down to 2x2. Is there a preference on which intake though to use of the 2x2. What is the idea for a high rise intake such as the tattersfield and thickstun? Wow I love gathering knowledge about intakes and flathead speed stuff.
go for the Edelbrock Super dual far better than the thickstun edelbrock went in with thickstun at the begining to create the highrise but soon pulled out as it just did'nt perform then Vic came out with the slingshot shortly afterwards
Mike........go with the PM-7......I have been running one on my flatty for a year.......two 97's linked in unison...... .043 main jets..... .065 power valves.........runs like a scalded cat! Great response in any speed range.......I love it..... Say, Hi! to the Peckerheads for me!! Brucie
Don't try to use blockoffs on a 4 carb manifold as most have dedicated runners---each carb serves two cylinders. Run a 2x2 super manifold.
Another vote for either of the two hi -risers. Connect your 97's with a throttle linkage and you shouldn't have any problems. If you're thinking about continuing the theme, Thickstun repo air cleaners are still around but you'll have to mortgage the house to find an original Tattersfield. For that reason and since I've been running one for 20 years I would go with the PM-7.
Getting a strong feeling like the Thickstun or Tattersfield I am going to use. I heard that the high rise portion of the intake makes for a longer time for the engine to heat up? I have not really seen a tattersfield used on a car before, might go that direction just to be different. I have never seen a tattersfield air cleaner! What are thought about what heads would be right to use with the thickstun or tattersfield. No way would I want to use weiand or offy heads on it. Something more tradtional. ya?
