Technical Flathead fuel pump issues

I have a 1953 Mercury with original flathead. I have tried 3 different dual action AC fuel pumps and the same thing happens. After priming, the fuel shoots fuel out once, then nothing. I remove the pump, only to find out that the fuel diaphragm rod is not connected to the pump lever. I have tried this several times, and the same results. Any help is appreciated.
