Flathead Flywheel, what options do I have for an 8BA 39 tranny?

I have a flathead passenger motor that originally came with a 9.5" clutch and pressure plate. Can I use the 8BA truck flywheel and a 10" clutch & pressure plate with the 39 transmission?

A 59A motor takes a different flywheel than a 8BA.Which motor do you have? The ring gears are not in the same place.

andy what has the ring gear got to do with the the pressure plate and flywheel? I had a 39 box behind my 8BA with the truck adaptor. I used the 8BA flywheel and pressure plate and a clutch plate that suited the 39 box. I cant tell you if the clutch you have will fit, but try it on the 39 box , if it does then off you go.

Easiest solution for me was to have a custom clutch plate made. 9.5" with the large bit in the middle for the '39 box.

Saved me from all kinds of headache surrounding flywheel swap, ring gear, redrilling pressure plate pattern, etc. I had a few flywheels, pressure plates, etc and just had no complete combination to make it work.

Clutch was slipping a bit last year - but this was not size related. I had a bellhousing full of gear oil before my transmission let go. (crack?) Had my disk redone this year after my transmission explosion. Hasn't slipped once.

FWIW - I was trying to swap parts between an 8BA and a 59 to try to get something to work.

Nothing directly. But my pressure plates were drilled for different patterns, were different sizes, etc. You might have a great clutch and pressure plate from a 59... but it won't fit on the late flywheel without machine work and the flywheels won't swap. Make sense?

Who redid your clutch to 9.5"? Man I'm having the 10"er sent to me. Shipping back and forth if I mess this up again is going to be a killer. The motor didn't come with a clutch.

Do you remember where you got a 9.5" clutch plate for a 39 box. Someone told me the 9.5" pressure plate wont work with the 39 throwout bearing and hub?

from memory I used a 10" pressure plate, I have about 6 pressure plates so I just hunted thru them until I found one that bolted to the flywheel and covered the clutch. It may have been a 59 type one but it bolted to the 8BA and covered the clutch disc so off I went. never had any trouble with it.

the pressure plate was the old 3 finger type plate, like the ones they used on the early windsor V8's. can take a photo of them if you want as there laying in the garage, had one out to sort out psycho billy boi's 5 speed conversion the other night.

i'm going to the multifinger pressure plate now, bit of stuffing around, but a much better pressure plate system.

Flywheel needs to match the engine. 8BA - 8BA & 59A - 59A - no mixing & matching. Ring gear won't be in the right place as mentioned.

After that, clutch disk splines to tranny splines, diameter to fit pressure plate. Simple? ;)

Had it made here in town. There's not a stock application with the same specs. Whoever told you that must have been talking about the stock 9.5" plate - which will not work.

Any clutch place in your area should be able to do this I would think? It's just finding the right size hub and mating it to the 9.5" disk. I took both discs down to the shop and said, "I want this hub with this disk. Can you do that?"
