Did any of you notice that there were very few vehicles parked on those hills that had their front wheels turned the correct way? In "parked in gear with e-brake" we trust!

Earliest Hot Rods were Model T's with Frontenac overheads, so it was easy to notice the Frontenac Apartments early on at :48 at 500 Hyde Street in San Francisco. If you can freeze and copy, please post that. Bob

Right around 3:30 there is a Model A Ford mail truck close to 20 years old and still in use. Bob

I guess a bitter irony is while this film fascinates me, is that so many in this film much like most mechanical and structures have departed to the big blue sky. This is not unlike most films, photos and literature freezing moments in time which itself never stops. Just a thought. I guess the moral of that is enjoy life as it doesn't last forever...

These moments however depict a time just after one of the big Wars and things were settling and the good life could be lived again after the hell.

There was a lot of desirable vehicles that's for sure. A great period piece thanks again @Nailhead A-V8 .

With all the modern camera stuff and Google Earth, could someone film this trip today?

Sure but would really be lacking in the ambience depicted here nothing but daily drivers...it would be a shocking change. I guess they filmed from the back of a truck. The quality was quite good too.

Even with the changes I recognize downtown LA. Cool!

  13. Yep, it is.....same bay windowed 4 story building in the background, also a palm tree to the right of the car in the same position, easier seen when the stake bed truck is gone.

I'm a little confused... I believe it was established that this was San Fran around the Bunker Hill neighbourhood, correct? So why are people referring to LA? Is this a combination of the two though it didn't look like that to me. Any freeze frames of the good looking young lady walking past the park?

I use to work downtown LA (1st and Alameda) many years ago. A few blocks from City Hall.
The building is gone now replaced with condos I think.
Used the Harbor Freeway to get there and back.
My way home was 3rd street and through the tunnel next to Angels Flight (also no longer there).
I remember all the cool, old Victorian homes up on Bunker Hill. I believe some got moved to a new street and became a show piece.

  21. If you go to YouTube, there is a split scene video comparing this video with a modern video of the same route in Los Angeles. I don't know how to show the video here.

My brother had his '57 Chev mordor painted by Scheib......the roof peeled off the next day on his way to work!
They did repaint it though and that time it stuck!

  25. I saw two things that make me agree with this. One, a building with a sign saying 4th and Grand. I don't believe that SF has a street named Grand and I do not believe that Grant Ave in SF crosses 4th Street. Second, I saw a pharmacy name Angel's Flight. I believe that to be the funicular in LA.

I saw the hot rods, but did anyone notice the Packard taxi around 1:30 - 2:30? I always remember my dad telling me that Packard sealed their fate as a luxury automobile when they started selling their cars to cab companies. Funny what sticks with you through the years.

Does the "Fat Ford" with skirts at 2:16 count? As a Minnesota boy who spent one year at UMD, I might have thought it was Duluth with those hills (but not the palm trees).

My honest first thoughts were of Rice a roni and/or a Steve McQueen car chase so guess I was on the rite track to being close:D
