Another one that is NOT a LEGAL GASSER ..... with the current umbrella-like use of the term "gasser" cars like this have been re-classified !!!! Ha!!! "No BIG Thing"!!!! L o L !!!!! No matter what you call it.... it is an awesome piece of drag racing history!!!! Even our own car falls into the liberal use of "gasser".... when in fact it would have run in the "altered class" due to the engine setback being much more than the allowable 10%.
i have always had a soft spot for 55s.my dad street raced one around fremont and san jose around themid to late 60s.it started out as the back up car for blown hell.would love to find it.Jimmy
Before my time but.... Dad, Uncle and a Friend was the team that ran these. The 55 was the 1965 NHRA champ in their class...not bad for some small timers from a small town.
I agree with this statement, I would add that Gassers look out of place on the on the streets. Gassers should stay on the drag strip where they put on a great show. CRUISER
It is a tough choice but here is my list of faves......... 55 Chevy 2-door sedan 37or 8 Chevy Coupe 1st Gen Chevy II's 56-62 Corvette 49-51 Chevy Sedan 57 Chevy 2-door sedan 56 Chevy 2-door sedan 55-6 Ford 2-door sedan 57 Ford 300 sedan 49-50 Olds or Pontiac six of the ten are asleep in the barn
YES..... That is how it was back then. The DRAG RACING we know today barely resembles the drag racing that evolved from the streets of America, to small airstrips, fairgrounds or any straight away long enough to race on. (note: prior to the opening of the area's first drag strip - Pittsburgh International Dragway ([1963]) - NASCAR sanctioned drag races were held on the 1/8 mile straight-away at Heidelberg Raceway (a DIRT CIRCLE TRACK) until PID opened in 1964. Most of the cars were built in the backyard garage, either driven or towed behind whatever could pull it to the drag strip, Here's one of the LOCAL cars that held a NHRA record. "....Those were the Days my Friend we thought they'd never end....." BUT THEY DID!!!!!
in the day --people built cars for max advantage in the eliminator brackets ( street, little, middle, etc ) found a class they were competitive in and tried to win it to get into handicapped eliminations---read the bio on the pannenton bros car -it was a winner and record holder before the axle and the engine set back and still street driven---so why are all chevy gassers built now running axles ? just for the look--so those of us who don't like it are just out of touch---cheaper to run hard and live on alcohol but it ain't gas-- makes sense but it just ain't right---need to get a Nash if i am going to ramble this much---most gasser match races ( SWC, MAZ,etc ) were not run with their nhra legal cars ,less weight, bigger motors, different fuels, but who cares it was great--tri five favorite gassers---

I always loved the Stone Woods Cooke gasser, can't remember if it was a 40 or 41, but it was beautiful
