Technical F1 Steering Box - 39 column

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by indomwe, Nov 19, 2016.

  1. Can a 39 steering shaft be pressed on to a F1 worm gear ?. I want to run a 39 column and banjo wheel with the taper/keyway, or is there an easier way to do this ??

I've got a buddy with a F1 box and a banjo wheel in his AV8. I'll check with him and find out how he did it. If I remember correctly it was a fairly simple install.

I didn't even think to take the early box apart and compare the two. On mine I cut the 40 shaft about 10" down and welded it to the truck shaft.

It's the same worm gear , so yeah

  5. For my recent Model A build, I cut my F100 box's shaft and spliced on the top section of the shaft that fit my banjo wheel. I slipped a short piece of thick wall tube inside the two shafts and did rosette ends and butt welds to make it strong.

yes I have done it but in my case I wasn't sure what year my steering shaft came from it pressed on just fine however the car shaft was much longer than the f1 shaft so I ended up having to cut and re weld anyways.

Checked with my buddy with the AV8. He did just like 51box and Russ B did.

You can use the shaft and worm from the 39 box in the F1 box with no mods. The shaft from the 39 box also fits the F1 worm as it is the same worm.
