  4. Had a great day at Famoso. This was Elwoods first time to the 1/4 mile and he did very well. I got two runs in the first of which was not the best, when I left the line the front end lifted and I took off towards the "christmas tree" but recovered and made a 11.33 run at 122 mph (reaction time was .002 sec). When we... got back to the pits we checked the air pressure and diameter of the rear tires to see why I veared to the left and sure enough the pressures although close were different as was the tire diameter, with no differential in the rearend when the front came off the ground the larger tire would cover more ground and make the car turn.

With the tires adjusted we went out for our second run and did much better. Although I red lighted the front lifted as before but went strait. We ran 10.61 @ 124.5 (reaction time was -.194).

All in all a good day, I got some time in the car and learned a few things. The final gear ratio needs to be changed since both runs had close to the same top speed it's running out before the end of the 1/4, I will go from a 4.33 to a 4.11. Also I need to check bolts for tightness more often as on the second run I got a face full of coolent (water) and found later that one of the foward manifold bolts had come loose. Ooops.

Here's the video of the first run, a better one is to come that my cousin took, but it needs to be edited. You can see me jump towards the tree. :p

  13. Yeah, we'll see if I can match that next spring. You see I red-lighted the next run, but took almost a second off the time. More practice. ;)

  15. My cousin put this video together of me and Elwood on our first trip to Famoso, it's a bit longer than what you are use to but I think he captured the whole thing quite well. Give it a look. ;) You also get to see my second and better run down the 1320.

    F-N COOL!!!!
Aperantly this is your truck engine whats been done to it(stocker-mod?) Just wondering we have been thinking about doing something similar chassis wise, but thinking basicly stock motors to stay on the cheep, but still running low 11's.
Are you running without a burnout? It seems like I had read that you couldn't do a burnout across the start line ontil you were in a pretty fast ET bracket?
    Thanks Robert

    Enjoyed the vid.
Cars with a locked rear are a devil to push around a corner ain't they? That brings back memories. I like the y-block rail, I have a couple of y-blocks myself. Really like the pickup- I like em tall and handsome like that. I had a 58 that had been raised back up to stock height after being lowered, I preferred the stock height.
Tim, enjoyed your flathead and y-block you-tube vids too.
    Mart.

  19. This is my pickup engine but not stock. It's a 338ci (3.875 x 3.575) with a mild very streetable cam. I ran a best of 10.61 @ 124mph but as said in the video a little taller gear will make it run faster and a bit quicker.
I did do a burnout but since my cousin shot the two before me he didn't turn around fast enough to get it.

My thoughts exactly when I saw that pic. It scares me to see that p.o.s. on such a sweet motor.

Edit: Oh, you got rid of it. Whew! I had two different customers' sbc engines fail because of the same problem in a Fram filter. Had to eat the repair bills and I will never use one again.
    Love that Y-block!

  21. As I posted before it was the only "shortie" I could find at the time. It's got a Mobil 1 on it now. ;)

Good, the Mobil 1 is a much better filter. Just finished watching the video and it looks like a lot of fun! It will be interesting to see what Elwood runs with the "little" motor & 4.11s.
    Keep us posted.

Tim the old Y sounded good on this end.Didnt like the 240 Temp-Hope it's not any thing major. Good luck on your future runs. I am close to finish on the flatty digger here and hope to be out in 2011 race ready for the nostalgia runs. I am getting some parts collected for my Y block also and will probably use it for a back up for the digger.

  27. I keep looking at your Y block and at the FED in my shop with the Jag six sitting in it. I keep thinking if a Y block is that cool for a Ford guy I think I need a 318 poly in that chassis and sell the Jag to a sports car nut (or give it to someone I dont like) See what you started! I have a LA block in the shop which is the same raw casting as a 318 poly. I will measure it in the morning.

The poly heads will bolt on to the LA block but there is an interference problem with the push rods. If you do try to mate them up (it can be done) make sure that you get a cam for a poly as the valve order is different as well. The best thing about the LA is that it is much lighter.

  29. I have the same straw hat, my portable EZUP!

  30. Oh I wasnt going to use the LA block.( I just have one here at the moment. ) I would use the real thing. They are the same basic casting and if a LA will fit between the rails so will a Poly. I built the frame rails no wider than necessary for the Jag six. I had for a short moment thought about using 5.7 hemi as i have two of them but it wont go in because of the oil filter housing and oil pump relief casting. My first drag car was a poly (1966.) Maybe my last should be too! I just really like the whole concept of Mctims unit , the way he has done it, how it runs and the whole idea of the vintage V8. Up here 318 polys are only 313 cubes. 313 vrs 312 . It could be fun!
