Didn't see much about this, but has anyone recently put these on their 59AB block yet? Just picked a set up and was disappointed to find out that the lower 10 studs on each side need to be removed and longer ones replaced. These heads are approx. 1 7/8" thick, as opposed to the "script heads" at about 1 1/4" thick. Oh what fun it is to pull studs...

Anyone have a source for longer studs?

    thanks

figured i could possibly try the ol' hardware store in town too.

I see that the Hot Rod Co. has the stud kit, but it's 117 bucks or something, and i only need 20 studs. Of course they'd have to be studs, and not bolts.

Anyone know the reasoning why this set is so much thicker compared to the script heads? are there two models like the "script" lettering hi-flow heads?

That's the way it was in your traditional days. Everybody knew it and expected it. I think the reason was increased water jacket volume

Edelbrock made two series of heads..."R" and "S", race and street, throughout the days when they were a normal full line product. S was a bolt-on for street people, R was the high performance head. Don't know what they did when they changed chambers on the repop heads, but in the old days R was made for relieved blocks, S for stock. I'd like to see flow comparisons of those two configurations...
I heard the new block letters are distinguished from the old bu machined tops on the letters...izzatso?
Studs you need are just stock Ford long ones like the top row, available from any of the Ford parts places.

  7. Bruce, I have a set of each "S" and "R" you described but my "R" heads have SPCL stamped in them. They appear to have been shipped blank. The valve reliefs are in place but completly flat for piston relief. Since then someone machined them badly. Do you have any information to confirm this confiquiration of the early block letters?

  8. that was typical of most Aluminum heads back in the day, and most made today as well. I know I've had to do it Many a time. Just get stock upper studs, got mine from C.W. Moss. Don't use garden variety hardware store studs, not gonna be strong enough.
To remove I have used low heat (Propane bottle) and candle wax to loosen the studs (old timer trick).

I've got a couple of Edelbrock catalogs in reach...one is pre-1949, other is about '53... both generations show the R and S designations

My block letter heads are almost flat as well...but they were obviously ran on an engine at some point in time. They are polished and have the bottom two rows of fins on on side shaved off. (I would assume for steering clearance)

I figured they were some seriously high compression heads, and required a thick set of gaskets....

    I haven't checked for an "S" or "R".

Just picked up a set of early Weiand heads - they have the "S" on them too & appear to take stock bottom studs. So Edelbrock probably wasn't alone in this technique.

Previously, I thought only Edmunds kept stock stud config, but apparently not.

thanks for the responses guys. Bruce, the letters are machined, judging by the swirl marks on them.

since they are "new" we just assumed that they would be the same as the new "script" heads since in speedway they say "same as 325-1115 but with block letters", It's no big deal, we got the studs out no problem. used the tried and true heat and pipe wrench, and all should is fine, was just curious why they hadn't mentioned that when the others fit stock. Again, no big deal since the studs came right out.

Never gave it a thought til this afternoon to check the mac's catalog, and sure enough, Jrblack30, there they are in my catalog :D Should be here in a couple of days, and should have just looked there in the first place.
