Picked up this motor/transmission a few years ago. Supposedly was in a running '46 Ford coupe this guy in Houston inherited. So the first thing he did was pull the motor/trans and was going to run a sbc/auto.

I need some help identifying the transmission. Don't know anything about it. Seems I remember some had a weird shift pattern and no park gear. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Joe. 20220416_140321.jpg 20220416_140216.jpg 20220416_140134.jpg 20220416_140027.jpg 20220416_140031.jpg 20220416_140104.jpg 20220416_140107.jpg 20220416_140122.jpg

    Slant pan Dual Range Hydramatic.
With only one visible band adjustment, makes it a later version.

If my mind is thinking correctly, those didn't have a park as such, but if you put it in reverse and shut the engine down, that would be park. Its been light years since I worked on one, so I might be off. Anyone?

Iteresting, it looks like the crank and flywheel are correct for that early transmission '53-ish
    But engine is a late 394, '63?

You are correct. If dual range, no park detent.

  8. They had a parking pawl like most automatics. You put it in reverse and when you killed the motor that stopped the transmission pump. When there was no fluid pressure the parking pawl dropped into place. When you started the engine again the fluid pressure lifted the pawl.

Actually I could be wrong, maybe you put it in neutral, I know that it should be in neutral to start.

Having driven a lot of older hydro equipped rigs that were pretty "loose" underneath, I learned to shut the engine down first, and shift to reverse in a second or 2. The loose parts will live a little longer ...

  10. One of the best of the early Hydro's. Engine off in Reverse will engage the Parking pawl.

We just got one working in a Hudson. We took a little time to get the neutral safety switch working, too.
