Technical Drill and tap the crank on a 283??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Lloyd's paint & glass, Jul 18, 2021.

  1. There is a web site called 12 Bolt. com that sells a kit to drill a crank for a balancer bolt which consists of a drilling fixture, a drill bit, and a tap for $40.00.
I do not know how to post a link.
    Could some do it?
    Thks

Just don't go and use the crank bolt to draw in your balancer. ;)

  8. Sleeper ,
The beauty of it is,,,,,Lloyd took his time ,,,did a good job,,,,,and if he ever needs to drill and tap something like this again,,,,he knows he can do it .
Confidence,,,,,,that goes a long way in hot rodding,,,,,,if we can try and succeed .
Then,,,,,we can show someone else it isn’t impossible.

    Great job Lloyd !
I have complete confidence in you man,,,,keep it up .

  12. Lmao!!!!! That's so awesome :D you know better ;) but, if i can't locate the bracket to move my alternator to the driver's side in conjunction with the short water pump, I'm gonna have to run a long pump, and a different setup on the front of the crank. So.... it's drilled and tapped. BUT, if i locate said bracket, nothing says i have to put a bolt in the crankshaft :D

This tap is meant to be used in a rigid machine, not by hand. And it's coarse thread.

I'd drill and tap the crank if it were out, and if I could do it in a lathe. Even with a drill guide, that hole isn't going to be dead straight. It'll work, but it'd bug me that it wasn't exactly square.

That's exactly what I did back in high school on my 283. Mine slid on almost TOO easy, so I threw on a couple tack welds...good to go
