  3. That is Dick Gazan at the wheel. He worked at B&M Transmission, and was instrumental in dragging this car out of moth balls from behind B&M's shop, and turning it into the car that it became most famous for. Dick also drove occasionally, this is probably Indy '62, where Dick drove the car for the win in Little or Middle Eliminator. Hugh Tucker gets all the credit for this car, as he was the actual owner, but Dick got little if any recognition, for his part in the success of this car.

  13. looks like maybe its a buick or olds 215 with the front distributor and aluminum heads. Maybe a 300? Explains the tiny blower. Really cool.

The site where I found it said "International" somewhere outside Detroit in 1963. I'm not sure maybe a name change later?

Well, now I am really curious because I live somewhere outside Detroit and never heard of it. So I googled International Raceway Park and found two: a Short track oval in West Virginia and a drag strip in Aruba, the Carribean

starting after post 2570 most of them and all the Golden Commandos shots are from there. His camera there in 1963 so I don't think he is mistaken?

I think I solved the puzzle. Those shots are at Motor City Dragway, at 26 Mile Rd and the Edsel Ford Freeway (I-94). It may have been referred to as "International" because of its close proximity to Canada. Note the metal covered silo in the background on the right side of the track.

Ya know, I think that is an aluminum Buick 215" engine, and not the larger Buick nailhead. It's only running a 3-71 blower, too...

Actually that shot is from Pomona (well before the hills in the background were covered by houses).

US 131 Dragway maybe Rattle Trap

I raced a B/A at Irwindale, crewed for a number of cars, including the Hawkins & Webster 15oz coupe. Great place to race! The late Don Wilson owned the B/A roadster, I was a week out of Vietnam. This was my welcome back to the world. We set B/A mark at 131 mph with a gas 364" Chrysler. We added some nitro and grenaded it. Wilson and I went on to build "Panic" AA/FA, but I got married and Gary Hazen took over my share. Dave Sorenson driving the Wilson & Sorenson B/A at Irwindale. Courtesy of Dave Sorenson

As a 13 yr. old kid and just in HS, being introduced to drag racing with the car I have now, this was one of my favorite cars. This car always looked so good and Olds powered to boot until they went to the hemi.

And in the far lane the Springfield MA Strokers' "Purple Grape". This pic, or one very much like it, taken at the Nationals was the HRM cover later that year.

  30. The second car is far from "un known"! That's Tony Waters Blown De Soto "Little Giant Killer". And that's at Famoso, March meet.
