What did a car like that typically weigh? And what was a fast number?

Mine weighed 900 pounds and was considered heavy. 8 flat and 180 was pretty good in the midwest. West coast guys eventually got into the low 7's and high 6's and right at 200.

There were a lot of guys using the small hemis that pretty well killed us sbc guys.

In the mid 60's before the slipper clutch the injected sbc was still a pretty tough combination because it was really light compared to the 392 and 6-71.

Early Simpson masks were like a hockey goal keepers mask. Basically thick padded leather with aluminum material on the outside. Hood style quickly replaced them.. Simpson, and Tom McKwen, colloborated on the development of adding a filtered mask underneath to.

I got tee the fabled twin of Collect once at Ontario Motor Speedway in 1970 I think. It was a real tuning trick to extract HP with a blown gas motor. You didnt have the tuning variability that came with running nitro.

When we ran Top Gas I don't think we ever beat a twin except if they lost a motor and had to run on only one motor. Then the single was at an advantage as the twin car was a bit heavier built. We were all set to join the twins when NHRA in their 'great wisdom' dropped one of the most spectacular spectator draws they ever had.

Those of you who have never seen these run have really missed a show. Especially when they were push started. With 2 of them (4 motors running) the starting line often looked like diesels running with all the black smoke us gassers used produce. It took at least 4 fat guys to push these back after the burnout (reversers wheren't in yet) so there were at least 8 fat guys standing around at the starting line too. Pretty crowded. Then watching as everyone piled in the tow vehicles...usually a suburban to carry the weight...haha:D

7 flat to high 6's was the norm and 200 -205mph. ....900 cu in.

Some of them had to have a 'gang' to service them between rounds. A few ran the motors a bit more conseratively and simply added more gas between rounds. Then after they had eliminated all us 'single' guys they installed the 'twin tune' and bashed each other for the finals.:(

Here is a listing of the most famous twins and a history of the beginnings.

These had the potential to rival the upcomming funny car at the time.
