Top Gas dragster on the rollers at Lions...

 

Billy "The Kid" Scott broke his back because of the rollers at Long Beach. And the fact that it had rained previous to the meet and no one had smoothed out the sand trap at the very end. He was driving the Beacon(?) Auto Parts Top Gas dragster. He started the car on the rollers and then used the drum brakes to stop the car and the rollers. His drum brakes overheated and when he made his run he had to hit the sand and was launched in the air and the car came down with a lot of stored energy. (This is how I remember it, your version may vary.)

 

Iconic legend. Notice in the last three pictures how G-forces and wind drag have lifted Mike's helmet off his head.

I have had similar experiences as seen in this shot of my T altered coming off the line at Detroit Dragway.
