Back in 1965 we put 3x2's off a 406 on my friends '60 352/360 Starliner and removed the bent front bumper. At a local dragstrip those modifications put the car in C/Gas. That class was full of Tri-five Chevys and even a couple '41 Willys. Here is a photo from near the 1/4 mile finish line showing a close run against one of the faster C/Gassers that day. The '56 Chevy won by a fender over the Starliner. Not bad for still having the T-85 3-speed tranny. My friend was told not to bring the Starliner back until he got a blow-proof bell housing on the car.

    Hello,

A different perspective: The power/sound of any Allison powered race car is not the same as a giant 671 Hemi FED. But, when an Allison powered race car comes off of the line, it is like no other.

In the June 1959 edition of the Drag News weekly paper, this large advertisement was shown. My brother and I already were weekly racers at Lion’s Dragstrip and decided to just be spectators for this unusual big-time event. It was the first of its kind. When our dad heard us talking about the “aircraft” powered race car, he, too, was interested and attended Lion’s Dragstrip just for that appearance.

For some odd coincidence, another So Cal photographer/drag race enthusiast took his own photos/film. Surprise, out pops a clip of the day we were spectators and our dad in the lower right corner with his Dobbs hat in its usual place.

Blue nylon jackets, white t-shirts, Levis and desert boots were our standard attire. Our dad? A dark suit and his favorite Dobbs Fedora Hat. (lower right corner)

I recently posted this sound film from the You Tube channel J NAKI. I had taken the film in 1959 and added the sound in 2021. The film and sound both come from 1959 Art Afrons drag racing episodes.

The film is the same day in July 1959 , but the official Afrons Allison sound was from another race in 1959 from a recorded LP album.

What kind of engine is in the car in the foreground? Distributor in front?
Even though it looks like an older car I bet it probably launched better than the 22jr car because the motor looks farther out with more weight on the front end.

    Hello,

Who would have known that in 1959 July issue of the Drag News that these local So Cal racers would have set the records for the Standard 1320 list.
    AA/Gas Dragster record holders

Chrisman Howard Cam Vs Mudersbach Twin SBC

    A/Gas dragster record holder:
    Jones/Mailliard Sidewinder Sound

    B/Gas Dragster record holder:
    Glen Stokey - Reath Automotive

    D/Gas Dragster record holder:
    Tapia Brothers-Hoffman

    :16 some kid in a Pendleton/Levis getting a ringside seat… filmed by James N.

    Jnaki

In reading the old Drag News weekly papers, this fact popped out. The list coordinated with some of the films my brother and I took during the same time period at Lion’s Dragstrip. We had our favorites and there were more films of those drag racers.

History presents itself in the oddest ways or is it coincidence? YRMV

I think the Tony Nancy car is the 426 wedge car stretched as the body is the same. Probably did that when he switched to the hemi

Jim and Allison Lee. In the golden age of drag racing Allison was every bit the tuner that Jim was.
