Yep, from the days when he headed up Division 2 (1964-1978)

Howard Cam Twin Bear experimental version?????

    Hello,
This photo is a little confusing as it shows the Howard Cam Twin Bear with some huge front wire wheels and tires. But, that is not the surprise in the photo. What is with the huge, single Hilborn Injector unit on each blower?

upload_2018-8-21_4-31-1.png upload_2018-8-21_4-30-42.png Deleting most of the eye distracting items still shows a single Hilborn Injector on each 671. It is very unusual to say the least. This is a great shot for:

The late 50s and early 60s were very innovative and this has it roots in So Cal history. Are there any other shots of this giant single Hilborn Injector set up for the 671 blowers? Isn't it the "Twin Bear" from So Cal? What time period was this set up shown to the general hot rod/drag race public?

Inquiring minds and all that stuff…

Good questions...those look like 4-71 blowers, somewhat smaller than the 6-71, so I wonder if Hilborn was experimenting with a smaller single-port injector for the 4-71? Ederle had a single-port derivation from the old "barn door" upright injectors, so maybe Hilborn was trying it out too?

    Hey Dave,
Thanks for some new information. Since we drive past the newer Hilborn offices and MFG building here in So Cal almost weekly, I will stop in to ask the public relations person that question about early Hilborn Injectors for the blowers. If we can't come up with some historic facts here on the HAMB.

The building is a nondescript, industrial, warehouse style structure that hides among the others of similar build. We have driven by many times and never stopped in for a visit. That will give me an excuse to do that. When Hilborn was in a Laguna Niguel building on the corner of Crown Valley and Cabot, I did stop and look around during one of my visits.

The old Hilborn Building was on a high, packed in, cliff supported by a beautiful brick wall when it was in Laguna Niguel. The views from the complex was south to the ocean, down the I-5 freeway. That was too bad it had to be demolished, but now there is a multi story apartment complex on that busy corner. Not progress, for sure.

    Hey Dennis,
Nice set of photos from early history... Those Hilborn Injectors were HUGE !!! Those parts are still around for all of us to see in person. Last year, at the Lions Dragstrip Museum opening, the whole display was out in full living color. It was too bad they did not have that huge injector as a memento from those times.

Here is the kicker, of all the times I have watched the film that I took of the Howard Cam Team with the Twin Bear in 1960, I never noticed the large injector so prominent in the short digital video. Old age, old vision, happy to just have a film of old drag racing...one or all of the above contributed to the oversight.

upload_2018-8-21_9-32-43.png The film is very short and fast.

Here it is in action vs the Lefty Muddersbach twin at Lions in 1960

Yea, interesting bunch of parts -
On one hand, a single slightly large injector, iron heads, the spoke wheels and large tires, but a really nice "aluminum" nose on the car.

Later the car ran Howards aluminum heads (much of the time), two hole injectors, 15", 12 spoke wheels and a "wood" nose.

It seems they always ran the 4-71 blowers. The restored car also has 4-71 blowers and it was restored/built by Donnie Johanson.
For some reason, I can't seem to upload pictures of the restored car.

    Cool, thanks ttwomotor -

Also, as noted on the cowl pictured here, it's "Bears", not "Bear"
Even Donnie got it wrong on one of the show boards. I'll see if I can find him to see just who...the Bears were. I think is was the team family, but I'll try to verify.

Got to be weirdest chassis configuration I’ve ever seen. Even has what appears to be some sort of I-beam for lower chassis rails.
