I don't remember ever seeing Ivo launching with the front wheels on the ground..........I also remember him
using whitewall Bruce's. Must have Inglewoods in this picture.

  6. Interesting injector scoop on the Gopher State car, though I don't think I'd want to be sitting back there behind it if the engine "sneezed". Must have at least work good off the line though. Launched hard enough to turn on the red light.

Thanks, Marty, it was captioned "Norton Brothers" and there was not enough of the car to see because of the smoke...will correct above.

John "The Crazyman" Taylor. Famous for his wild fire burnouts in Australia. Once he stalled because the fire starved the engine of oxygen and the rear of the car got burnt. Raced it for a while with the rear all scorched up

ReisChambers2.jpg I think that this is Ries and Chambers...not sure, though.

Rare shot of the Chrisman #25 with a tail, taken at Bakersfield, after the Chrismans towed it to Daytona Beach for time trials. That's why it says "Mercury" over the obvious Chrysler engine...Mercury sponsored them and they build a Mercury overhead to run at the Dayton trials...then back to the hemi.

williams brothers.jpg Williams brothers Dodge-powered roadster at Santa Maria, racing Dave Marquez's Ardun...Williams won the race.

stone caddo.jpg Long-time racer Carl Stone at Caddo Mills...a former airfield in Texas that remains today, but no drag racing there for a long time...Carl was running a flathead here, but later would upgrade.

I did not know Carl had a Model A. Only have seen pictures of his 32.

This is the one that really put Carl on the drag racing map.

    Hey YD,

We did not see Tommy Ivo at Lions when he first showed up before our time there. As the photo from Drag News shows, an early carburetor version had black walls in the rear, then moved on to some flashy whitewall slicks. (M&H below, from the Hot Rod Network.)

But, his first red injected Buick FED was very prominent at Lions Dragstrip from 58-59-60, when he added a 671 to the Buick, then had the twin Buick FED racing there, later.

Only once, did we see him pull a mistake wheelie at Bakersfield in 1960. He was a hard charger with super quick reaction times to always get a lead at the start…
