    Hello Marty,
Would this fed be Hayden Profitt? It is one of the unknown FEDs in my files. I filmed this in 1960 at Lions on the staging lane leading to the start line. Sorry, I did not get any action shots of this FED. But, I am still looking.
    Thanks,

I have that video also...pretty sure it is at Colton, as the shutoff runs slightly uphill, and the return road was cratered just like Colton...I know, I went off the end once at Colton....no fun!

    Hey Dave,
Here is a clearer video of the photo. What is the lettering on the body of the FED?
    Thanks,

The lettering is "Californian" on the cowl. I found a couple of pictures of Manuel Gonzales "Californian," one before paint at Lions and the second, with the pearl colors, at Bakersfield...you video is the first motion shot I have seen of it since I saw it at Lions around '60 (?). Manuel was tennis pro Poncho Gonzales' brother. One story I heard is that Lefty Mudersbach built the chassis.

Hayden Proffitt also drove the Bayer - Frietas inline blown Chevy Twin.

Thanks for all of the replies, it will be interesting to find out if the Dragster, or the '60 Chevy was red, maybe both.

Profitt drove the ill-handling Bayer & Freitas dual blown Chevy dragster a couple of times at Fontana. I've been told the chassis was a redo of Lefty's Money Olds -- but that may be a "stretch".

One week the dragster, running sub-par, qualified in the Middle Eliminator category prompting the officials the next week to disqualify dual-engine cars in that category.

Jack Bayer did have some success with it, but I can't remember if that was before or after Profitt drove it.

  13. That's exactly who it is. Hayden's dragster was a red Dragmaster.

Good grief Marty, you had to be 11 or 12 in 1960. Your mindset always continues to impress. Hope I can remember half the crap I've forgotten as time goes on. Had no idea Hayden Proffit ran a FED back in the day.

    Hello,
I remember the only non, gold colored Dragmaster that I saw consistently at Lions Dragstrip in 1960 was one that was slightly purple or a shade of red. The old films do change colors. I thought the Airoso Willys was purple, too. Is this the Dragmaster for HP? ?If so, yea....if not who was it?
    Thanks,
    Jnaki

I'm pretty sure it is Cyr and Hopper, they briefly ran a Dragmaster chassis with a blown Chevy. Looking for a picture now.

I had the pleasure of restoring the Coleman Bros, Chassis Research FL 44, for my good friend Tom Willford. The 1st pic was taken in '88, sitting beside the Don Long Nostalgia T/F we were preparing to race that season. 2nd shot was at Bakersfield in 2002, I still can't imagine going 180 in that car ! 2012-09-27 084849.jpg P1010053.JPG

My old friend Earl Howard usually drove the Coleman Bros. car. He was one of the owners of the House of Balance engine balancing shop, located in the same complex as the Colemans, along with Ladd's Porting Service. After the R/E car, he went on to a more mundane sport, drag racing blown alcohol hydroplanes. Regards, Chase

Thanks for the info on Earl Howard. Did you know Duane Reynolds ? Duane brought the car to Washington State, and raced it blown and unblown as well as lengthening the chassis a couple of feet. The best thing about the "stretch job" was, someone telescoped smaller tubes inside the frame rails, making it very simple to restore the front axle location.
