The original Mr. Potter also had a soft spot for aircraft engines. He stuffed one into a 57 Plymouth and then a Plymouth wagon

EJ also had an imagination. He built an electric car that ran down a set of cables that he laid out prior to the run.
This thing had 2 electric motors. 1 in front and 1 in the rear ... all wheel drive

He even dabbled in jet power

Later EJ turned to Tractor pulling with a series of Double Ugly Tractors. One of which was powered by a very rare double Allison (24 cylinders). I recall an article back in the 70's that told the story that he had found some paint on his Double Ugly frame and was last seen removing it with a sledge hammer. he did very well with this monster

Herm Peterson found it around 10 years ago, and returned it to it's former glory when he raced it in the 60's, took it to some Cacklefests, it now resides in The World Of Speed Museum.

The "Northwind" is quite a different story. Jack Coonrod and Ed McCulloch have been close friends since Ed drove this car in the 60's. It was quite a project, after Jack found the remains of this car and had the rest re-produced, the best part was that Jim Albrich (the original engine man) and other crew members were also involved. Jack has quite a collection of his and Ed's racing memorabilia at his place.

I had heard that, but havent seen it. I saw Herm Peterson run a few times. Everyone remembers his "indy" car, that sure attracted a lot of attention, even if it wasnt very successful.

George Bolthoff's gas dragster at Lions...George's engine was one of the most unique sounding gas burners I have ever heard

Early Train at Lions, not sure who is driving here...Kenny Safford and Roy "Goob" Tuller were among the early Train pilots before Bob Muravez took over

I can still hear that George Bolthoff gas car. Kind of a constant 'rump-rump' sound. Never heard another motor that sounded even close.

Good question, George...I am guessing that this is before, because when the car sheared a rear axle and hit a post at Lions, it had just gotten Joe Pisano's big Chrysler, but Pisano's name is not on the door in this picture, so this shot may have been taken when the car was running a 364" Chevy.....in the photos below by George Hutchinson, notice that Pisano's name is on the door, and on the new version in primer, at Bakersfield in March 1966, the doors were all that they saved from the old car:

And here it is with paint, with Pisano's name on the door, but I don't know if this is before the Lions accident or after, when the car got new candy red paint:

It's hard to tell, I'm going largely the the lack of "Pisano" in this picture, as Bones Balough and Gary Durbach first ran this car with a stroker Chevy, so I am guessing that this is before the crash...also the headers are different than are the ones with the Chrysler...but, like you say, just a guess...but this conversation brought back a really cool gasser, and the only one I remember with a Speed Sport scoop.

    Three wheeled dragsters anyone
Some of these we're actually quite successful...

Kenny Ellis won more than his share with this early effort

Kenny Ellis - with his newer 3 wheeler
Really needs to be a sidewinder - just to peg the weird factor
