Going to pick up a 327 mounted to a Jeep t90 and they guy said it was a solid engine he built when he owned a gas station way back when. He told me the 327 crank broke so they put a 283 crank in it? Then they put it in a Jeep truck for his daughter but she just couldn’t drive it. Now after ohh 25 years I’m getting what’s left of the Jeep. These just don’t look exactly like the double hump heads I have. Any ideas? Maybe it’s just all the dirt making things look off? I can’t get there right away to look at numbers.
It looks like it to me, if they put a 283 crank in it did they change the pistons? The pin location is different between 283 and 327. Pat
My 462’s are straight down and on the edge of the Jeep heads it slants? Did they make different versions of the double humps?
See what you have. I'd buy a full gasket kit and do a quick teardown, inspect, clean. Depending on how the jeep was used coulda been full of mud and dust If the heads are in good shape run them, if they're 2.02 you're lucky. There's a few version of the humps. Check the piston height as @1934coupe suggested. I might as well start asking what cam it has, all small block chevy threads eventually go there.
If they didn't change the pistons, wouldn't they be .125"+ down in the hole with who knows what un-compression ratio.
What you have is a "pig in a poke" . It's worth a gasket set to look inside. You have double hump heads; if you remove the valve covers and check the casting numbers, you can maybe get some info on valve sizes and combustion chamber volume.
Is there a provision for a temp. sender on the exhaust side of the head? It might have the later 291 double hump's.
I'd just pull a valve cover and check the casting number www.v8volvo.se/mekartips/identifiering/chevrolet/toppar/toppidentifiering.html I'd agree that I would pull the heads and do some checking to see what it is all about though. A small block Chevy gasket set is pretty cheap insurance.
I have been trying for weeks to get this engine back to my place. the guy I’m buying it off of has patience let me tell you. After failing to find a trailer to get the whole Jeep he cut the whole Jeep up for me with a sawzall.. set all the parts I need laying off to the side. I couldn’t find a ride to even get the parts so he texted me just now and was like I’m gonna load everything up and just bring it to you. Guys a legend. I’ll let everyone know what the heads are when he brings everything out.
You could run a boroscope in through the sparkplug and possibly see a number on the top of the piston, then cross-reference the number to see what the piston specs are.
Got a picture of the full engine.. I think it’s worse then the 75$ 283 witch is still going strong by the way.
We can supply alot of info if you gather a few numbers from your motor. If you pull off a valve cover you'll see the casting number between rockers. Behind the distributor and down where the transmission attaches there is a large casting numbers for the block. Also, in front of the right head on the flat surface will have stamped numbers. Those (if still there) can tell alot. Let us know what you find.
He’s bringing it out around Tuesday and I’ll be able to look it over and get numbers. I’ll post them up.
