Couldn't help but post this. They are just too cool looking. Found the ad in the back of a Dec '54 Hot Rod mag I picked up at a show last month. I didn't come up with much via a search, was wondering if anyone has seen a pair of these? Pics? They wouldn't fit my application, but was wondering if they were made for any other blocks. Kinda remind me of a 50's push mower.
I don't recall ever seeing a set. $37.50 was a week's wages for a working man at the time. And for a real hot rodder of the era they were all about looks and nothing about performance.
Jackpot! I knew someone would have a pic, they almost look new, are they being repopped? Also, were they only made for '54 Merc-Fords?
They will fit any Ford or Mercury Y block made from '54-'64...i.e., 239/256/272/292/312....but not the larger Lincoln Y block 317/341/368 (which was also installed in some Mercurys), or the truck version of the Lincoln (279/317/302/332). They were originally cast by Bud Ehlert out of Los Angeles. No one repops them to my knowledge.
Saw some on a Model A with a Yblock in it at Viva a few years back here in Vegas. I think they look very cool and would buy a set if they were recast or some old ones if I happen to find some. Michael
Just like George's father, Mr. Frank Costanza had boxes of raincoats, he designed, from the Jerry Seinfeld show (TV), the family of Bud Earlhart, probably has boxes of these valve covers in their garage. Some of you guys from California should research and find this guy's family and bug the crap out of them until they give up the last of the boxes of "cross fin" valve covers. If you guys don't act on this, and I mean like taking days off from work on this, I am calling in the American Pickers and you guys can cry as you watch them pay pennies on the dollar for these and then let the tattoo lady sell them for BIG BUCKS!!!! I don't have anything bad to say about the tattoo lady, just that some days she is hot and well other days, well other days.
