Bought this late 31 for 12,500 delivered to my door. Sold the stock stuff to a local restorer for 2000.00
I have the same amount of money invested in both of these..... about 12.5 k each. But have a ton of work in repairing rust and hotrodding the fenderless one. And while the rod is very quick and fun to drive I enjoy the nice stocker (except for 1940 hydraulic brakes) a lot more!!!! So after buying a nice 12,000 finished car and starting with a 500 dollar rusted hulk.... I recommend buying the nicest car you can find initially...I would sooner sell off the hotrod if I needed cash, even though I put every nut and bolt on it.
Thank you guys for the comments. I'm still looking a bit, right now I'm trying to get a shed built and have a wedding on the way also. So we'll see what I can pull off. Sent from my SM-G935V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
A's are getting pretty scarce out here in Oregon. Complete solid coupes are over $5 grand now not running. And heading up.
In Northern NJ, there has been a older restored '29 Roadster for sale for $14,500. I haven't seen it in person, but going off pictures it looks great. I have little doubt that $12K and a trailer would take it home. If I was doing it all over again, this is the way I would go. Keep it running and do some changes to it, but keep it drivable all the while. https://newjersey.craigslist.org/cto/6010829106.html My father bought a '31 Deluxe coupe last year that was also an older restoration. Nicer than the Roadster in the CL add and I think he paid $12K for his car. They are out there, just need to be patient.
Dude, concentrate on your wedding, very important. Then work on having a good marriage. Keep $8k in your savings account and keep reading Craig's List while you're on the shitter or on a coffee break at work. Every 6 months an incredible deal seems to pop up around here. I'm always broke so I just spectate. This one passed by a week or two ago here in New England. Running-driving-registered-inspected. They're out there, ya just gotta be ready.
O.P. "Does anybody have a general idea what the going rate is nowadays for a solid original Model A? I'm talking like a good project car" This 1930 Ford Model A Coupe sold this past Tuesday March 20, 2017. Sold for $6,412. It was in Milwaukee. This would be an excellent project car!
I think it depends on how nice you want the car to be. The rest of the Hammers are right that something in the $3,000-5,000 is probably right but if you just put in say an extra $2,000 grand you could probably get an excellent body and interior that in my opinion would save mucho bucks on panels etc. Mercuryguy
Honestly , by the time you build the hemi , the 4spd, put a quick change in it and get the 32 frame, the body will be chump change , I think 4-7k will get a good coupe body.. I've never witnessed a model A that doesn't need patching, I've heard they exist though!
