Stock Corvettes do nothing for me.

Some great pics uploaded here-kudos. As to Pat's comments about the stock Vettes, I generally do not get too excited with them either. I remember a few years ago at the Woodward Dream Cruise when I rumbled up with my 62 open headers (a questionable practice I suppose but some of us never grow up) and my cousin and I were standing on a street corner in Birmingham and a couple of solid axle Corvettes rolled by and they were so quiet you could not even hear them basically. It was almost embarrassing IMO.

Funny thing on this great 61. This car has some really great history and won class at the 62 Winternationals and did quite well against some of the competition in the eliminator runoff (which was won by a stock 62 Corvette going heads up against a Willys gasser). This Grassman/Nicholson/Wade 61 was tuned by Earl Wade and had many successes. It was only 2 VIN numbers away from Mazmanian's 61 and arguably has a better win record than Mazmanian's car (although Mazmanian did run several classes). Whatever they were both great cars. An added bonus that is really rare is that Bert owned the car for years and drove the wheels off of it and when he decided to restore it he contacted Brendan Grassman the original owner. After talking to him he asked Brendan what ever happened to the original engine and Brendan said he still had it in his garage and now the car has the original engine that he ran at the 62 Winternationals. Pretty cool IMO.

A few months ago, a friend, Dan Hampton who owned the Pizza Man Corvette Drag car called me and told me he was interested in buying another solid axle drag car and wanted a comp so he could determine price. I told him to call Bert Brown who owned this great 61 (and who has posted on here before) as Bert had offered the car for sale for awhile. Dan and I had several phone conversations and all of sudden Dan calls me back and said he bought the car and it is now in a friends museum in Wisconsin where he lives. Dan will be a good caretaker I am sure. One of the best solid axle cars out there IMO.

This is a REAL air box car, race car all it's life. Maybe Dave will give some better history of it. He drove it, I only rode in it.

This # 57 Cold air Box Corvette is likely the most documented air box racer in existence.
It has been a race car since new and is still raced in Historic hillclimbs. I was fortunate
to be able to race this in the Hershey Hillclimb several years ago. Trust me. It is not just another
pretty face. It is quick and nimble. Great fun.

Jim, You are correct about a stock sounding Corvette, buttttttttttttt there is something
about the sound of a solid lifter 57 Fuelie that gets my heart pumping. DSCF0007.JPG

Dave I agree on the sound of a "stock" Vette with solid lifters. My avatar car has a big block with considerable overlap and it sounds really great but the sound of my black 62 with a totally stock 327/365 with the original solid lifter cam (same as the 30/30 Z-28 cam) is a sound I really appreciate every time I start it. I also really love the sound of the 365 when you wind it way out. That is what gets my heart pumping a little faster for sure.

Really appreciate the airbox cars and if there is one "stock" car that would always get my attention, it would be pretty much anyone of the solid axle airbox or tanker cars. They would be probably the only solid axle cars that I would leave 100% as they came from the factory (unless someone slipped on whitewalls and then I would have to go with the black walls).

Thanks Dave, I heard the fuel car is missing from the museum. Hope we can soon have bench racing. I need a beer and I don't even like it.

I have to agree. I've been fortunate to have owned several early Corvettes. None of them were stock. I'm going back, starting in the early sixties. Used ones were very reasonable.
