The 1962 Dragmaster "Hellzapoppin" is now in the Hands of Bobby Schlegel of Carmel,N.Y. He is doing a complete correct restoration on it in it's injected configuration..He contacted Dode & Martin and has conducted extensive reasearch to do it right, with numerous calls to Ron .

brought her home today, all ready talked with Bobby LaRegina to reinstall the second loop,
looking for a sbc blower & injection system to bring the car back to her original looks,
saw a picture with port injection, Bob long gave me a picture of it that way,
here are pictures loading her on the trailer and in the diner parking lot.
hoping??? to have it repainted & blown by summer events, have more calls to make
but the chassis is in great shape for her age, the engine was freshened up a while back
started right up, no puff or anything.
Radiator shell hide a radiator, Bob Long had it for round robin racing at the valley (1/8th mile)
working on some way to cool her without the shell showing
make her look like the picture above

hope all goes as planned and have her at the reunion and race
can't wait to see her on the starting line next to one of her friends from dover

I meet Bob at Marcus last month, nice guy, glad he's restoring Hellzapoppin. Is this Ron Abott dozing off in the Dover pits? Hope there is a period photo somewere with "Alley Oop" and "Hellzapoppin" side by side. Any idea which car had more Dover wins?

got all the stuff needed from Hilborn,
all new brakes & drums,from Speedway
hope to have the stacks from the chromer this week
and the headers are done at Central Ct. Coatings

Bob..Bobby Wants to Put both Cars Side By Side...At the Danbury Reunion Sept.5 AND he's totally for Running it at the 2nd Annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia Drags-Sept.25-26 at Island.! How 'bout You? Tim Hallock (Also ran Dragster at Dover) has been located in S.C. and has registered on the Dover Forum. I Have his phone number ...sharp in the memory deptment on all the facts from This period. ! That 'sleepy Ron Shot" is the same car after putting on the blower.

 

Bobby said the car ran the blower motor only once, then it went into the new long wheelbase chassis. Ron sold the car and it continued to run Dover. At some point it launched REAL hard and stood up on the push bar landed on its side and tweaked the chassis.

 

This is the only photo Bobby will release until the car is finished. He likes to do the 'Grand Unvieling" thing

 

My favorite "local " dragster.
I watched it run many times at Lebanon Valley. It had a very unique sound and would rattle your eardrums when it ran down the strip.
Some said it turned 10grand easy. It sure sounded like it did.

 

what kind of times did it get with & without the blower?
I remember it well from the "old days". Love that car!

"Alley Oop" has a clear coat too, applied in my booth. September 22, 1991 was the last time the two rails were side by side.

37 Kid...Thats an awesome shot of both of them together...I'm sure Schlegel would love a copy.post that at the Dover Site! He's making a Presentation display board when he shows it, with all the photos we've uncovered from various collections. He's going to contact you to 'swap' photos and info.

 

jimV...we just posted a bunch of old Eastern drag News copies.Theres plenty of Abott's times listed .But got to watch Year and which car ...Schlegel is restoring to pre-supercharged configuation.It then got the blower and all the later cars were supercharged.

Found It ....And With the Blower running Alley-Oop" ! from 1961 -I think...great slide collection we saved . The 37KID will like this. Look close in the background for a mighty mopar State Trooper car. Bob...get that thing Done...Schlegel is gona beat you...Get it to Island too Sept 25-26 ...PHOTO OP time side-by-side! ON THE TRACK after all these years !

WOW! Side by Side, we'll do that again September 5th! If it is true they only ran the car with a blower once the weather sure did change that day! These two show a cold spring or fall.

 

Solved the mystery of your comment on weather changing. My shot is the only time in '61 he ran a blower on the Mark I chassis...Your Supercharged shot ,-The Next Year with newer updated chassis for differant rear and tranny. Bobby Schlegel knows the complete story and clued me in. His '61 version restoration almost done! and sports the correct Hilborns.When I said "Pair" them up...I ment At The Track side by side ON THE Track at our 2nd annual Nostalgia Drags to recreate my shot /angle ,etc. . Don't know how many opportunities will happen for this stuff in the future...thought we'd grab the 'moment' while we can.

PLUS special surprise Guest appearance of Henry "the Fonz" Winkler. Bobby said He'll post Final Photos in the "Schlegal Gets Hellzapoppin " thread at the Dover Drag Strip Forum (General Discussion) Sat. Night .( For all who can't attend) Still has to mount the whitewall slicks -windshield -tach & belts . Bob Swanson said he'll bring Alley-Opp to park along side ....Just like they paired up in '61. And Bobby intends to RUN the Car at the 2nd Annual Dover Drag Strip Nostalgia drags At Island ,Sept 25-26 .

Heres His Official Crew Shirt We Designed...He'll have at Lebanon Aug.20-21 AND a number of other Nostalgia shows.Sounds awesome when he fires it up.

 

I have some Ansen caps with them, the seller was was nice enough to give me some of their history. From what I have been told, they came off of Ron Abbott's Hellzapoppin. I was hoping to put them on my car, but they are too big for any of my wheels. I guess there just a really cool conversation piece.

I finally got my logon problem corrected, I hope??.

Here is a picture of my dragster finished and on display at the Foxwood Casino & Resort show this past June. I will be at the POCONO DRAG LODGE Reunion Aug 6th. As well as the 3rd Dover drag strip race Aug. 20th & 21st, at Lebanon Valley Dragway, NY. I was at the York Reunion and was given a lot of history of her also, some was about when guys raced against her. Hope to see any of the race fans that remember her at one of the up-coming show.
