Dye getting the jump on Gary Cagle/Herbert Cams FED at Lions

    Hello,

The most unusual competition coupe from Eldon Dye went through some transformations in the succeeding early years from 59-60. We caught him at three different tracks in So Cal. His (brown or maroon) bantam bodied coupe with the Cad motor at 59 Lions, then repainted a dark blue with a racing stripe and the 671/ Hemi with what looked like one of Howard Cam’s Chain Drives at 59 Riverside and 60 Bakersfield. It was always a hard driving, fast race car. But it was most unusual as it was mentioned (296ardun) that the Bantam Body was a pickup cab made into a coupe. A great looking car and it was fast. Check out the great lead he had on the record setting Herbert Cam Special FED…fast reaction time…

    Hello,

Back in 1959, these coupes were in full swing. This yellow sedan/coupe goes “nameless” from Lions Dragstrip in 1959. If anyone has information on it, that would be great. Some of them were dragster frames with a modified, coupe body attached to qualify for those classes. Yet, some of them were fast enough to race for the Top Eliminator at most meets.

This yellow coupe had the look of the times and stood out well. Some of the other comp coupes went against the big names in FEDs at the big meets in So Cal.

Who in their right mind would go against Ted Cyr in his record setting FED at any meet? Bill Colburn of the Colburn Glaze coupe makes it an all-out “in the dirt” effort to beat the usual, top eliminator. Riverside Raceway, 1959 East vs West Championships.

This car somehow made it to West Covina California during the mid to late '60's and here is the wild part of this story .
It was a sunny spring day in June 1967 and I was a junior in high school. School just let out for the day and I hop on my Hodaka to head home when I spot this same Nash comp coupe with the stack injection but with a license plate and mufflers cruising the high school . I said holy crap I recognize that car from An early Hot Rod magazine article . It still had the lettering on it. So now I'm pumped and grabbed throttle and banged thru the gears on my bike and finally caught up to it at the stop sign . I look in and see my friends older brother Rick Estes riding shotgun. We knew each other so I give him the nod and the owner who's name escapes me nails the throttle and lays two 10" black smokey stripes half a block down Merced avenue. That was a sight that I will never forget.
