I'm guessing the reason it went away was, just due to the fact that it was so similar to the dragster class.

  2. The class went away because NHRA did away with it.

BigDrag, I really like the proportions on the body. Very nice and subtle changes.

Roberts-Zartman-Cookerly "Bad News" B/Comp Coupe from Pennsylvania. This car was 1320 Drag News Record Holder and won the World Series of Drag Racing in Cordova, Illinois in 1960.

Driver Pork Zartman, on the left, went on to additional fame and fortune as the driver of Charlie Hill's Filthy Forty Willys C/Gasser. In 1963 the Willys was C/Gas Nationals Champion and NHRA National Record Holder.

I saw this at the '67 Oakland Roadster Show....always wondered what happened to it...finally found the owner (on the HAMB) who reported that they never ran it, not enough money,...the engine went into a drag boat...car disappeared....

Thanks, I have to look that article up again. And Thanks for posting that rulebook, thats pretty cool, too.
My favorite era of drag racing. Wish I had the know-how to build one. As close of replica as the modern rules would allow anyhow....

  16. I would say not much past '67. About the time they ruled out fuel altereds. Yeah, computer controlled bracket cars are a lot more exciting to watch.:(

Fuel altereds lasted much later. IIRC,Mike Sullivan was the last "real" Fuel altered to chalk up an eliminator win at a major event? Bakersfield 1971??

I think Dean is right about the comp coupe class disappearing around '67, it may have been earlier than that even, I seem to recall that they were combined with the roadsters for a couple years before both finally went by the wayside.
As soon as I found this thread, I got off my ass and dug this up and scanned it, the Dye-Hampton Fiat. Bad-ass is kind of over-used around here, but I think it applies in this case. I bet Dean saw this car run. IIRC, this car was later re-bodied as the "American Bandstand" Corvette funny car.

This is a mystery...body looks very much like Bill Traylor's "Animal," seen above with blown Chrysler, but this has a sbc. I am wondering if this was the "Animal" after Bill sold it and built a fuel dragster?? It appears to have an aluminum frame, as did the "Animal."

Gas was rolled into Comp, and those classes still exist, MP is now part of Super Stock elim., the designation is now SS/AM, SS/BM, ect ect. IIRC the fuel altered classes were rolled into the original Pro-Comp eliminator in the seventies, and disappeared due to lack of participation. Gas Dragsters and altereds became part of the current Comp Eliminator, and are still there. The Modified Sports classes were gone before any of this started, they became part of Gas long before Gas was moved into Comp.
