I removed the back side retainer but it doesn’t seem to want to come free from the column. What am I missing? It seems like it should be simple.
El Scotto--Looks like a 40 column.Have converted many to use with auto trans--tap it off from the bottom. It is stuck on there via a piece attached to it sticking into a hole in the column. If it breaks no worries--I have a few of them.
So just tap it towards the steering wheel or just away from the column? It’s a 1948 steering column, but I think it’s the same column used in 40s. Thanks a bunch! I appreciate the help!
Between the column and where it bolts down there is a long piece of metal that contours to the column. There is a dowel through that keeps the shifter from turning on the column. I can see it in the picture you posted. This dowel also goes through the cup on the end of the shifter. If you lift up on the cup on the end after unbolting it it should slide down and off. Posted some pictures of what shifter arms look like.
