TIME FOR HAMB INPUT ON ANOTHER AT KUSTOMS & HOT RODS ARTICLE COLLECTING DRAGSTERS is the topic this time. And I am focusing on "rails" or "top fuel" jobs - not muscle cars, funnies, altereds, gassers (at least this time). Nothing against the others, but I just want a tight topic. So tell me all about collecting them: How big is it? (Mecum says it is a "miniscule" niche) Agree or disagree? Who collects them? Regional or not? Types? Events? Prices? Values? Clubs? Parts sources? Memorabilia? By the way, did the HAMBER's who helped me earlier see the Tex Smith story in the latest issue of Auto Trader Kustoms and Hot Rods? I think they did a nice job for old Tex. Gunner
I've had "Alley Oop" for about 20 years now, a Lyndwood built by Pat Bilbow in 1959 and raced until 1962 by the Danbury Modifiers. I knew nothing about the car when I got the remains, but quickly found photos and first hand memories and info on the car. It was a good runner, ran in 6 states, held the B/D National Record at one time, was the House Car at Dover Drag Strip. It raced at the Montgomery, N.Y. airport in 1959, two guys went to see it run, had such a good time they went home and built drag strips, Connecticut Dragway, and Dover, in New York. I still need to assemble the Algon injected SBC and make it a runner again. Should I post photos?
Can you email me a high-res image of your car to try to use in the article? [email protected] Final photo picks are up to the editor
Send me an email at [email protected] and give me some quotable comments about collecting dragasters. Talk about types of cars, who collects them, how big that branch of the hobby might be (in your opinion) and in general about values (are they high, low, going up, going down). Thanks Gunner
