Ford Styling sent the car to Dearborn Steel Tubing (DST Industries) where the aluminum skin and supporting structure were removed and replaced with a tubular racing frame and distinctive fiberglass fastback body, with a rear window reminiscent of the Corvette Stingray. ........................"

    I'm afraid there is no survivor, correct?

    BTW: There will be another '36 Gläser bodied V8 at Pebble Beach this year, she has just undergone a complete concours restoration.

    The five Apollos started life as production Thunderbird Hardtops, with production scheduled for November 4, 1966. VIN numbers were 7Y81Q122570, 7Y81Q122571, 7Y81Z122572, 7Y81Q122573, and 7Y81Q122574, all were later converted to Landaus by Detroit Steel Tubing Company, and all had the 428 V-8 engine, except for 7Y81Z122572, which was equipped with the standard 390 V-8. These cars were designed from day one to be fully operational, and saleable to the public after their show duties were complete. Detroit Steel Tubing Company was owned by Andy Hotten, and specialized in custom versions of production cars. During the seventies, Andy Hotten would customize Lincolns into mini-limousines and turn Mercury Colony Park Station Wagons into Lincoln Continental Station Wagons"

    This is deeply weird :eek::D

    This link posted by MrFire above pretty much defines the point where custom and coachbuilt meet. I'm always interested in those sorts of crossovers.

    I wonder, did the old custom builders go for the now-classic de-chromed look because they lacked the techniques for making large pieces of brightwork from scratch, or did the aesthetics dictate? It is clear that one-off bumpers, heavy grille brightwork, etc. were part of the capabilities of coachbuilders like Spohn. A lot of the coachbuilt stuff of that era was also ugly as hell, while many early customs were seriously understated and elegant.

    Yes - and we did save some of his trucks, the Danish one will be back on the road soon (with a body by Fleischer in Gera!), powered either by a French flathead or one of the few super-rare Ford AD6 blower Diesel engines.

    This Bauer bodied Ford FK3500 from his collection was saved by another enthusiast as well.
