I've been thinking of chopping the top off of my 53 Plymouth Cranbrook But where would I get a replacement windshild for the new opening?
You've got to get the stock one cut. Not easy to do, on a curved windshield, though. Most glass places won't do them.
many cars are ruined by people who do not think of glass until it is too late. search glass cutting or chopped windshield here on the hamb. there are some good posts. there was a guy a while back showing the chop on his 62 impala. bunch of people chimed in about how cool he was and how cool the car looked. no one bothered to notice he had widened the top a few inches and there is no way in hell a person is going to widen a piece of glass
A few different ways to cut the front glass, since they are Safety Glass. Rear windows are typically Tempered and can NOT be cut. Plan ahead.
Oh, BTW, I chopped a 54 Plymouth for a guy (Kenny) who lived in Elizabeth (since moved to Nebraska). It's NOT a hard windsheild to cut, as it doesn't have a lot of curvature to it. I'm pretty busy at my shop, but if you can't find anyone else to do it, I can..just be sure your windshield opening was handled correctly during the chop!
You know, forget about chopping the top, and screwing with the glass (which you will never replace on a road trip). I would section, take out 3 to 4 inches out of the middle and call it quits. If nothing else, You will be able to see the stop light.
