There was a Henry Ford, a William Harley, Arthur Davidson and a Joe Isuzu. Was there a "Steve Chevrolet"? And where did the other makers get their names?

    Dodge Brothers

    Preston Tucker

    Carl Benz

Ferdinand Porsche (spelled different I think)

    Charles Dureya

I think Cadillac and Pontiac were named after Indian tribes in the Michigan area. Funny side not. The Cadillac was originally formed as a result of the ousting of old Henry from his first company. The Henry Ford Automobile or auto car company by Henry Leland and the other financial backers. That is why the very first Caddys and Fords look identical. Later on old Leland got bootedvand started the Lincoln Motor Company. Ford never forgave Leland and when he started having financial troubles old Henry swooped in and boughtbit out from under him. So this is roughly how Ford ended up with Lincoln. Of course named unceremoniously after the old president Abe.

Im gonna try and do my best on this without looking it all up again

Durant had 3 guys build prototypes to compete with Henry. Of the 3 the one Chevrolet built was huge and expensive. Durant didnt want that. He chose the cheaper car and applied the Chevrolet name to it which pissed off Louis who split from the partnership and sold his stocks.

He never fully recovered and at the time of his death, was a simple machinist at the very plant that now carried his name.

Gaston on the other hand, died on the boards at possibly the Hollywood track.

EDIT: Speedstitch bettered and beat me....Ransom, not Robert!

Didnt Louis Chevrolet work on the assembly line before he passed?

  22. I think if you do a little research you will find that many of the early automobiles were named for their creators.Too many to mention here but some of the more popular were (Ransom Eli Olds)as in Olds Mobile;Alexander Winton;Walter P. Chrysler;William Crapo Durant and so on.

One that did not was the Mercedes automobile. The creation of Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz was named for the daughter of Emil Jellenek(sp?);the largest Daimler and Benz dealer at the time.

REO and Oldsmobile was Ransom Eli Olds

Which is kind funny as Jerome Increase Case - Case tractors and for a very short time Case Automobiles

Studebaker - clement and John Studebaker started as blacksmiths making wagons in Indiana

Kaiser - Frazer - Henry Kaiser and Joseph Frazer
