The Bucrons have been mentioned many times here over the last 20 years. Good to add them into this discussion.
M & H “ muscle car” bias ply tires aka “cheater slicks” and skinny Pro Tracs up front…I’m not winning any slalom races…
I have used 29in Firestones with some good results. Planning on installing my 28in Towel citys. Also have a pair of radirs for no prep, odd tread, but stick like glue. Also only running 250hp to 300hp range.... probably couldn't turn a bicycle tire. I run vintage traction bars, square tubing for US Pie Crust drags no prep. That was fun racing.
Hi Had Firestone Gumwalls on my 34 and I've always thought the scalloped sidewalls are cool . Yours are enhanced with whitewalls sets off your paint well and I do think that the swelled profile looks like a real business on pavement type tire . I think it's a great set up real muscle just let them heat up first my firestones ran hard when cold but great grip and highway .
A couple of months ago I was at a show that was a 5 hour drive from my home, and as we were leaving, it began raining. I'm currently running 10.5x15 Towel City cheaters on 15x7 reversed wheels, so I wasn't looking forward to the drive. Thankfully the guys I was running with were willing to go slower than normal so we could stick together. We drove south for about two hours before driving out of the rain at not more than about 45 mph. At that speed I didn't fishtail or hydroplane, but it wasn't a fun drive nonetheless. The lack of wipers didn't help either. Yes, I had copious amounts of Rain-X on the windshield – it seems that at 40-45 mph, the water doesn't blow off, it just sits there. So do I recommend running cheaters on the street? Yes, if they fit the overall vibe and era of the car, just don't drive like an idiot in inclement weather. @Forty-eighter , you asked for opinions about the cheaters on your car, so I'll oblige. The slicks on steelies and the wire wheels up front do not jibe together era-wise. Add in a tunnel ram, and you have yet another era represented. Wires are post war, cheaters are late 50s/early 60s, and tunnel rams are late 60s/70s.
sounds like an exciting drive! yeah, I've been there. Rainx works better on aerodynamic cars, unfortunately.
I've been caught several times with maybe 12 miles to get home, and once with about 60 miles of freeway to get home. I never had any problems anytime, but I sure wasn't getting crazy on the gas pedal either.
Since they don't have a DOT rating, I'd guess they're just a slick with grooves and not street legal at all.
Not a cheater slick but a soft compound bias ply that I run on my car, DOT legal especially down here. I've never driven in the rain with them however based on previous experience I wouldn't feel too comfortable with Firestone bias ply on the front. Originals of my car ran these Firestone Lightning tyres
Bucrons were great traction tires. I wish someone would make copies of them in the original compound. I tried running them on the street, on my '58 Chevy, and they picked up every nail, staple, and piece of wire on the road. I spent more fixing flats than cruising.
I still have mine... and I had a puckering experience with them caught in the rain..... I am looking into some M&H's or Towel City units for my 57(s)... similar to what Squirrel posted......
The only "cheater" slick I ever had was in 1966/67 when I bought a new Schwinn Stingray bike that had a cheater slick, I started drag racing in the mid 70's and you never heard that term very much until the whole "traditional" deal started.
The Good:----Hell yeah, they look great! Looks like its a "hot rod" The Bad:--rain, who cares? It starts and stops, stop when it starts-go when it stops. The Ugly:---the cop that stops you asking why are you "in violation" of inspection rules with slick tires.
TC for me. I had a couple grooves added for superior wet weather handling. These are 16", 30.5" tall and a bit over 8" wide
I guess the car is kind of off topic, but back in the 70s I'd throw these in the back of my car when I went racing. I'd drive to the track (30 miles away) drop the exhaust, change the tires, race, and then put everything back the way it needed to be to drive on the street and head home.
What size are those @alfin32? I was thinking about getting a pair of 28.5x10's for my 56, but whatever your's are seem to fit nicely.
