I guess if it sang "Unchained Melody" that would be something.

You'd never have to "post a link" to your blower gig.

Gets the "gears turning" just looking at it.

He could call it "Davey Sprokett".

A drive get up you can really "sink your teeth into".

Probably a diehard fan of "Link" Wray.

Is this a living example of a "chainer"?

    That's all for now, next...

Had a chain break on my Mac 10 powered Ruttman mini bike at full song. Hit my left calf and my leg kicked my left arm off the handlebars. No fun cleaning the crap out of the wound !

Also had a couple friends who were out riding their stroker Shovelheads when a master link let go. They pulled it out of his leg with some needle nose pliers. Chains do and can break.

I don't see a problem with any of the setups that have a chaincase. The open chain setups are pretty selfish though, anyone to the sides of the car gets hurt and the driver gets to "shrug it off". Not cool. Then again, my OT avatar picture says what i think about the rules.....

  8. I recall seeing a few with double and triple chains like on a combine, but I don't recall seeing a single in my travels.

My small block chevy has a chain turning the cam for the last 200000 miles. Still would not want a longer one on a blower out in the breeze.

Another thought............how many old Triumph 650 Unit Construction bike engines have you seen that DID NOT have a large piece of the left crankcase missing where a broken chain ate it ?

  16. It is a cool pic, but the fuel line secured to the chain guard is a bit disturbing. This guy I suppose truly had no fear.:)

  22. Most of the old chain drive blowers you see on dragsters that you see are running a chain guard of some sort. That said I put over 100K on an open primary on my hawg when I was a kid before I went to a belt. Granted it was probably only about 80 HP and only pulling a 500 pound bike around.

If I were going to run a chin drive blower I would probably want a chain guard on it and maintenance would be a must. I personally think if I were shooting for a period prior to the Gilmer belt that a chain would be what I was after. ;)

i drove ready-mix trucks; the older ones had chains that drove the mixer drum. you wouldn't believe what happens when one of them lets go!

  24. O-ring chains on modern Jap-bikes handle upto 200 hp. So i wouldn't be to scared with a modern chain on it. Looks cool also but i would use a belt:rolleyes:

chains have been used for all kinds of power transmission...at all kinds of speeds...and some very heavy loads...everything from motorcycles to heavy trucks to trains and bulldozers......so.

    Chain story....
Late 50's built a v-drive boat with 85hp flathead engine. Needed a v-drive but father hated the whine of the then straight-cut geared v-drives available.
Enter C & S Machine in SoCal, had a v-drive that consisted of toothed pulleys and toothed belt, guaranteed to 125hp.
Apparently our flathead V-8 was more than 125hp, we tore up 4-5 belts. Spent many long hours digging pieces of SS wire and belt rubber out of the box.
NEW IDEA: double-row chain!! Guaranteed to hold the horsepower and be quiet! (Compared to competition gears)
Took boat up to Lake Piru with new plugs and timing adjusted, first pass turning that ol' flathead about 4700rpm and, yes, KABOOM!! Hand gernade went off under the driveline cover! Biggest part of v-drive case was about 3 sq. inches, part of chain went thru full gas tank (both sides) made from galvanized steel sheet. Fortunately boat did not catch on fire but after that, boat got geared v-drive with the howl!!

The TH-425 found in Cadillac Eldorado's and Olds Toronado's has a hefty chain between the pump and the rest of the transmission.

When maintained properly, they do just fine conveying the torque (over 500lb-ft) of a 500 or 455 cubic inch engine, to the transmission, and final drive, to push a roughly 4800lb car.

Blower drive by chain, not a Flathead...

    Hey JG,
Our favorite Blue A/Altered from Long Beach had a sputter against the Boudakian Bros from Visalia in the Smokers March Meet in 1960. That little maroon A/Altered was something, small, powerful and fast. You cannot give them an inch or a split second... that is one quick altered.

NOTE: Most chain drives make a lot more noise than the wide Gilmer belt set ups. The chain does have an old time feel to it, the whole set up should be enclosed if you must have one on your motor. Our first choice was a Howard Chain Drive system with a enclosed cover. (My brother was a Howard Cam fanatic...) But, when the wide Isky/Gilmer belt system was in our trunk just staring at us, there was no looking back, on with the show...
